It’s night time, around elevenish, and time for me to take the trash out. As I do, this is what I half-seriously expect to suddenly have look around the corner of the house from out of he total darkness at me. I know it’s a silly idea … but in that cool silence of the deepening night some little portion of my mind asks, “Are you sure it can’t happen?”

So far my imaginary (?) night-time friend and I respect each other’s boundaries. Mine, the limits of the dim carport light, his, the edge of the house beyond which is the blue-black inkiness of the night.
