SO. Guess who saw Pacific Rim for the second time a few days ago?
I was seriously blown away by the visual depth and design strength of this movie in a way that few movies ever accomplish. Thus, thanks to a day and a half of screwing around between commission work, a fan Kaiju concept mess happened.
I nicknamed this guy Ōtsuchi after an old samurai bashing weapon supplied to me via Wikipedia, which I thought seemed fitting. He’s a pretty hefty Cat 4 with huge land speed, some seriously massive bulk in the front, and a swath of electrified fleshy “mane” tentacles that discharge on contact, making him the Kaiju equivalent of a battering ram/taser two-for-one. On the flipside, his ungulate legs and rear look pretty frail compared to the rest of him, and they’d probably be the easiest parts to break and cripple him. I don’t think I’d want to be on the receiving end of any charges regardless, though. That skull dome turned out meaner looking than I thought it would.
I even had the soundtrack proper to jam on while I painted this guy, which was totally awesome and apropos, and had great FA company via Livestream for the first chunk of working him. I am so buying the movie as soon as it’s released. And possibly the art book. Definitely the art book. I have a mighty need of that art book.
P.S: Apologies, again, for not really having gotten to most of my notes yet. My brain's still in a bit of a scramble, though I'm shooting to tackle responses to at least some of them before I crash tonight. You guys are awesome!
Enjoy!
