They are -more or less- considered to be like ears. Just a racial feature

They're a lizard-like race from the Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (as well as FFTA2 and FF12). Like most anthropomorphic creatures, the fandom takes them in for sonas, art, and whatever else you can think of

I never got into Final Fantasy because:
a) there are way too many games....do you really need 15 games to squeeze all the juices from your franchise? It kind of overwhelmed me just how many there are x_x
b) the human characters......they look too perfect :o. If every character is just perfect looking (what I mean by perfect is they're attractive and have no flaws in their appearance), its kind of inhuman and feels artificial :o, humans are full flaws--warts, bruises, cuts and other things, but they can be wonderful at the same time. Yeah I have this issue with anime as well x_x, especially when they jump cut to different styles its just....odd :o

Believe it or not, many of them are quite different from the others. From personal experience, 1-6 are significantly different from one another, but are all still considered the RPG genre (they all just have differing mechanics/class/leveling systems). 7 onward (excluding 11 and 14 due to them being online MMOs) are kiiiiiiiind of the same but still different enough to make you want to play them (Except 13 because it's garbage!). The 'spin-off' titles, such as Tactics, Crystal Chronicles, and the others are all also different.

Square typically has a lot of innovation between the games, and the best part is you don't have to play any of them in order to understand the future/previous ones! (with the exception of 10-2 and 13-2, as they're sequels to 10 and 13, respectively) Just pick one up and try it. Don't like it but like typical RPGs? Try another one!

If the 'flawless humans' are really what's putting you off, try FF1-6. The 8/16-bits will HARDLY be anything close to "flawless"

eh....I dunno, I'm still not drawn to it. I never really liked RPG's from Japan of this type....heck I don't even like Kingdom Hearts despite having Disney characters (and I love Disney). I'm more into Mass Effect and Elder Scrolls.....more familiar feeling, even if Elder Scrolls have unlikable elves (I always go Argonian)

...I've been off most anime-related things due to an incidence from a crazy anime fan (a Wapanese who blurts out random and incorrect Japanese) x__x.

They have poor eyesight, but incredible hearing. To the extent that some cover up their eyes in general and rely on hearing + scent! (I guess kind of echolocation-like?)

Dogs too. Terrible eyes, amazing noses and ears.

Imagine if a dog's senses got mixed with a lizard I suppose XD
