He's military career and connections should also be taken into consideration. One aspect about Mark I am exploring is just how many missions he's been on that he's not at liberty to talk about. He's like a walking enigma with dark secrets. All the more reason he's so deadpan.
I guess he's dating Val as a way to take his mind of it and take in another side of life to balance it out.
