Yep... that's Cobalt Crossbones as a foal... eating an apple... I dunno why.
... Oh wait, it was to show that he was not always part lion, so you can cross off mistake of nature. Still working out his origin, but it seems rather obvious that his pony/lion state and his cutie mark has something to do with it.
