This full-color pencil piece was commissioned by
sabredragon at FC 2013. He wanted a pic of his character Sabre snowboarding, showing speed and power.
Sabre gave lots of information, reference and snowboarding tips to help me get exactly the right pose and attitude.
I LOVE the way this piece turned out, both for the action and the color combinations!

Thanks for such a stunningly beautiful piece of art from FC2013 Sandy! It was actually on the plane ride to San Jose that I thought of the idea of this picture. I thought "well I'm from Canada, and it's cold in the winter, but at least we have our winter sports to make getting through winter easier!" I also thought it was a funny idea to have a dragon snowboarding, as I'd imagine dragons prefer warmer climates. That's is why Sabre is bundled up really well for the weather!
I was blown away when I first saw all of the amazing colours you were able to fit in! Your traditional colouring skills are spectacular! All colours show up so boldly and brightly (like his awesome orange winter jacket)! I absolutely agree with each of your colour choices, and it almost looks like he’s on fire as he smokes down the slopes!
I love how you have Sabre essentially entering the negative space of the picture, as you can see the background in a sort of tunnel behind him. It is a very unique 3D effect, and looks like Sabre has gained some serious speed! I love how the edge of his right wing sort of wraps and follows around the top of the curve! It’s a fascinating artistic touch! I also love the suggestion of snow all over the negative space and background. I have no idea how you do these techniques with traditional tools, but the result looks incredible!
The colours help make everything pop out so much and everything is clearly defined. I really love the way you did his goggles around his eyes, ensure they don’t water like crazy with blazing speeds like that! It’s a really cool look not being able to see through the dark lens. The light blue border and dragon logo look wicked! I also like his little grin and determined focus.
The wings looks amazing! My eye always wants to gravitate there with how much of an amazing blend of colours you were able to put on his wing membrane. It definitely looks like a sort of “rusty gold” colour – a sort of mix of yellow, orange, and brown. His wing muscles and fingers are look so good because of the way you did the lighting and highlights! I also love how they are being pulled backwards by the wind, which gives another sense of his speed. Heck, maybe he should spread these wings out and glide his way to a landing, hehe!
His ruffled orange jacket looks really warm and comfy on him, and of course, I love the touch of style with the brown straps. I was always afraid that Sabre would look cold on a snowy mountain, but with all the winter clothing he has on, I’m sure he’s just fine! His gloves with the see-through claw protectors is so freaking cool! That was such a good idea of yours!
I love his baggy pants, and his long tail sleeve that has been belted and zipped up to ensure it stays on tight. All the highlights/lighting done in the pants to show how they are being blown around in the wind and how much folds and wrinkles get created must have taken forever, but I think it was totally worth the tedious effort! I love the rubber toeboots and the tight bindings keeping them bound to his board. Even a dragon can enjoy this sport with the proper equipment!
The extensions and rounding of the tips of his snowboard looks really good, and Sabre is still nice and balanced in the middle. I think a sunset colour on the bottom of the board was a fantastic idea! It looks like that long, scary, snake-like Eastern dragon is rising through fire. I like how you did his eye and all his spine-thingies that run down his neck.
The colours in the snow and slopes look great too, with blue and white mixed in to make it look... cold, hehe! The attention to detail in the spruce trees is very impressive as well! It’s the perfect weather for snowboarding seeing the clear blue sky with not a cloud in it!
All of these amazing details must have taken a very long time to do, and I can’t thank you enough for all your hard work and effort! The completed result is so fantastic, and I am so happy with it! I think it will make an amazing piece to showcase because of the degree of action happening and how dynamic it is. Hopefully you have tons of other furries lining up to get their character drawn doing other extreme sports as well! I think it makes a great theme!
Take a bow Sandy - you’ve done one heck of a job! It's so... cool! ^.=.^
