Why am I re-posting this image?
This picture is one that I think about quite often,
and one that my over-active
mutt brain uses for a reference when my daydreams
of talking animals get the best of me.
I suppose that every one of us has his or her own
notion of what the term “furry” means.
For me, it boils down to the idea that evolution could have
taken two paths towards higher intelligence.
Let me elaborate:
What if canines had evolved at a rate equal to
the primates? What if these two species had climbed
the ladder of cortex development hand in paw?
My interpretation of this idea is why I’m interested in exploring
the notion of the benevolent talking dog in a setting
that is as close to real life as I can make it.
Image along with me, will you?
The earth has two dominant life forms, sharing the
complexities of modern existence side by side.
The human race, with all of our conniving and
dishonesty, is supplemented and offset by intelligent
canines, canines who are capable of spoken language,
rational thought, and great wisdom.
Most importantly, the canines would carry their traits of
unbiased love and open-heartedness with them, leading by
example and providing a balance for the human race.
And yes, the canines would spend lots of time in pubs,
being jolly and singing off-color barroom chants.
But I digress…
So here you have two equal populations, living parallel
lives, and providing a symbiosis sorely needed to prevent
the hatred that has plagued us for millennia.
I don’t think nature got things quite right, and I want
to do a little to help steer us in a better direction.
I get great satisfaction out of being the talking dog
that is friendly and kind to everyone; the mutt that
doesn’t care what you look like or where your social status
falls and that crazy pooch who just loves everyone.
I fursuit in incongruous settings because it frees people’s
minds to accept that random kindness is really possible…
and to get free beer.
But I digress once again.
This is the reason that I wander far from conventions,
often on my own. This is the reason that I trot around
the city streets, visit the bars, chat with random strangers
and try to provide a smile and hug whenever I can.
Yes, some people view my behavior as kooky or
eccentric, and shy away from an encounter with the
crazy guy in the dog suit. Some folks view me a novelty,
thinking that I will charge them a buck for taking a picture,
or that I’m selling cologne or condos. Some think I’m making
a commercial, advertising for sandwich shop, or walking to
a kid’s birthday party.
And that’s all fine, because a surprising number of people really get it.
They get what I’m trying to do!
They buy into the notion that I’m a conversant mutt who’s
interested in their lives and really wants to see them smile.
They understand that the world could use more interactions
of this nature, and they participate in the ruse to the extent
that it becomes real for both of us.
Sometimes I’m the nutty middle aged guy in the dog costume,
but sometimes I get to be so much more…
Do I endorse fursuiting by yourself in a crowded venue?
Well, no, but I’m a cagey old mutt and I’ve had good
success so far.
Risks are inherent in life and I’ll take a few to get the
results I want.
Anyway, back to this image.
Here I am walking the streets of San Jose,
no destination in particular and no agenda other than to
act natural and see what happens.
Admittedly, this is California, and folks are typically accepting,
so my reception from the public was warm and welcoming.
I am the biggest dork you ever want to meet, and I’m able
to laugh at myself and take a good ribbing if the situation
arises, but truly that is very rare.
Mainly, the folks that do want to interact have active
minds and supple imaginations, and the feeling that I
get from these adventures is something that I treasure
and re-live every day.
You may see me ambling about, a mile or two from a
convention, silly smile plastered on my canine face,
and wonder “what the hell is wrong with that guy?”
I’m fine, I swear. I’m just interpreting my version
of what it means to be a furry.
So honk and wave and imagine a world where
talking animals roam the streets in real life, not
just in the confines of a hotel.
I think this reality is just what we need.
And I think I hear a barroom chant coming from
just around the next block…

I love your mind, dogbomb. <3 Just lemme say that first off. I wish there were more people like you out there.
Also, I'm wondering if you'll be going to further confusion in january? I'm going, its my first furcon, and I can't tell you how delighted I'd be to meet you and give you a big hug and tell you in person what an inspiration you are.

Thank you so much!
I have found a gold mine of like mined folks in this fandom, and I appreciate the kind words.
I shall be at FC, and I look forward to meeting you!
FC was my first con, too, and I can't tell you what an amazing experience it was. You are in for a marvelous adventure.

In the fandom, yes. But we need more people like that outside of the fandom, too. Obviously you aren't going to find people who wish anthropomorphic dogs were real, but I mean people who just want to get out and make other people happy. XD
*happy butt wiggle* I look forward to it, myself! :D
I sure hope so. My partial fursuit should be done by then, too! I'm doing everything except the head, and the head should be started in November by the person I'm commissioning it from. So if you see a cheetah/puma hybrid with a 60" long tail running towards you looking very excited, that's me. XD But don't worry, I won't glomp you. I will likely very shyly ask you for a hug. >w>;

Wow, what thought-provoking words you got there! It certainly is something to think about in terms of evolution. Coincidentally, there is a mural in the Orlando area that could show your example a little bit. : http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9508483/ Yeah, we can only wish that there will be animals that can speak and understand human language very well, but you are close.
For the repost, you are welcome; and ohhh, those keywords-you are making my facial cheeks rosy! *I giggle.*

Thing is I have a feeling my tail would knock over more then just coffee pots.
But gosh I hope suiting out in public will nit just be confined to parks for me. I hope I will be welcome else where so long as I have room to turn around and not tail bowl. xP
My co-workers some seem open minded and I have hinted at thing by saying, well what would you think if a giant talking dog on two legs walked in to our store, What would you say or do? Most seem to think it would be silly but cool. So I hope they will be as accepting of the idea of an awkward blue red panda going around the store saying hi to people. With permission of the manager of mine who is easy going as heck, and maybe a page to say hey I am here just to talk. :D

Yeah, 60 inches of tail is alot to make sure it dont bump stuff. Also being my first fursuit I am glad I got one with good vision and ventalation.
Yup many great adventures ahead, going to my first fur-con this October. Fur Fright with my friends and boy friend. So I hope to meet many furs there.

Yours is the same interpretation of furry as mine! I totally agree with your thoughts. Though I'm not sure if I've yet tackled my shyness enough to fursuit in public like you do. The most I've done is wear my tail outside of anthrocon's venue to walk to market square a few times. The self conscious feelings lessen each time but are still there. When I get my fursuit (which will be soon), then I'll see how I feel about suiting in public outside cons. :)
You are just awesome. I feel like we're almost two dogs of the same spirit in a sense. Either that or we're just both crazy. :P

You have truly lived the philosophy of walk a mile in a man's shoes to better understand him, or in this case, in his paws. I greatly enjoy reading of the new perspective suiting has helped you develop and how you try to spread such awareness to others. Though the world you have theorized may not come to be, the lessons that canines can teach us are still relevant even in our primate society. Here's hoping your canine wanderings continue to expand your mind and those around you!
Oh yes, I have often thought about that matter too. Animals (or, at least domestic pets) DO give an unconditional understanding and loving that seems so rare in our human society. This is what makes the core of the furry-phenomenon for many people (besides porn XD), including me, probably. On the other hand, if one spins that experiment further, would our society be different if it were populated by upright walking mutts like you?
One issue is that most, if not all breeds of dogs are the product of domestic breeding, and therefore a product of human society. When we look at wildlife that is unaffected by humans, we have wolves, and how do they behave? Like all animals, they care for the members of their packs and protect their offspring, but it is hardly unconditional. When it comes to picking order, food, territory, reproduction, they fight their own kind as ruthless as we humans do; only without guns and bombs, something only evolution like we had it could’ve given them.
In the end, the very thing that has brought us the horrors of war has also brought us the German Sheppard: human intelligence. History has its own irony with the GSD being the favorite pet of Adolph Hitler…It just seems to be part of the human experience, that we have good and kindness, but also hatred and cruelty.
But we all can do something to steer in the more desirable direction, and if one is unsure how to do that, a look to the Biggest Dork You Will Ever Meet might not hurt

Yes, you do bring up an excellent point, and one that I tend to ignore when spinning my
furry fantasies; domestic dogs are indeed a construct of human design and wild dogs (wolves)
are hardly the loving souls that I write about on these pages.
I spin my stories with the notion that evolution somehow included domesticated dogs in the
grand scheme. It's a common idea that many of us share, and I find it easy to make the
non-logical leap (mostly because I'm not always the most logical mutt...)
Thank you for the comment and the support as always, my friend.
My dorkiness always appreciates seeing your name on my page!

I didn't intend to diminish your furry fantasies; I too fantasize about waking up one day to see an anthropomorphic creature in the mirror, and to find out the entire world is suddenly populated by them through magic (I also have a not-all-that logic side, next to my rational self ). A part of me DOES belief the world would be better that way, no idea why...
And if you like my name on your page, just wait til you see me in all actual oddness in your hometown

No worries, you didn't diminish my fantasies one bit.
Actually, your comment just added fuel to the fire.
I know that you are a kindred spirit when it comes to the world of furdom and
I appreciate it that your views dovetail nicely with mine.
You can be assured that any oddness that you may possess will be much appreciated
in Costa Mesa. This is, after all, Southern California.
We're as odd as you can get....

Very insightful thoughts. I think the image is very thought provoking. It appears you are standing at a crossroad, looking about, not sure where the trail might lead next, but not really caring. It's not about the destination, but the journey of adventures, and so you pad about on your merry way, looking for mischief, and drinks too! Look behind you, dogbomb! There are slush puppies within reach!
I loved the writ, California rest easy under the watchful eye of their resident, mutant canine.
Though I must say, I doubt dogs would be less inclined to violence and hatred as we are. In fact, it might be worse, with their closed-order pack mentality making them more prone to bullying, racism, and cultural isolation. Not to mention that if we were both on two legs, our anscentors may well have ended up killing all of them. I'm probably over thinking it, but still. >.>

Thank you, my friend!
And I agree with you; the logical end result of the evolution of canines would probably
not be what you see on these pages, but it's a darn fine fantasy that I think many
furries buy into.
And who knows, maybe dogs could have kept the humans in check by giving them the
sad puppy eyes...

If only we could truly live in a world that was as ideal as the one that you describe.
It would be a place where there are millions of gentle souls, just like you!
It would be a place where humanity reached out to each other, extending a paw of kindness and compassion, just like you!
It would be a place where there is no evil and people think the best of their neighbor and fellow human, just like you!
It would be a place that we could romp, be silly, have fun, just like you!
It would be a place where people would have respect, empathy and love, just like you!
It would be a world where all of our leaders set a wonderful example for the rest of society, just like you!
Thank you for reminding us all of what this world should strive to become :3

Aw, my friend, you are too kind!
*buys you a slush puppy*
I truly think that the fandom, and the folks like you who populate it, are a force
for whimsical change for the better. If only the rest of the world was more accepting
and open this would be a far better place.
The slush puppies would explode with icy flavor but would need a better
lid to stop the never ending shedding mutts...

And I'm probably about to read too much into this, but as much as I love dogs, domestication, by humans a.k.a. primates, probably has a lot to do with the whole open-mindedness and love thing, otherwise dogs still be running in packs with their more wolf-like instincts.

Thank you, my friend!
And, of course, you are correct; domestic dogs are entirely a construct of human design,
and it is doubtful at best that evolution would have acted in the same way.
However, it is a fun concept and one that I enjoy exploring.
Thank you for sticking with my flawed logic!

Perhaps you have heard me say this before, perhaps not. When I am at fur cons and I see these anthro animals, canines, felines...or whatever, the overwhelming feeling that wells up in me is this.... THIS is the way the world was meant to be. This wierd and wonderful managerie where all species, sizes and shapes all gather for social events, parties and just enjoying the compnay of kindred spirits. Something very wrong happend here and the world wound up the way it is now.
I am always reminded of the quote by George Bernard Shaw, that Robert Kennedy once used,,,
"Some men see things as they are and say why - I dream things that never were and say why not."

Yes, excellent, I am 100% sure that Shaw (and Kennedy) would be proud to have
that quote used in this context.
Thank you for the lovely comment, and for really getting to the heart of furry.
I feel the same way; a convention is all about love and acceptance, and
I wish the feeling could bleed over into the real world in a more substantive way.
All we can do is keep trying and do our part one person at a time.
Cheers!

Humans slaughter each other for such petty things another entire species would not have a chance.
Some think that Neanderthals where wiped out by humans because humans saw them as different and a threat. Your canids would have had the same result.
Maybe we could go on one of your walks next FC

I'm sure you are correct, and any logical person would have the same
thoughts about the end result of competition to the human race.
However, I really enjoy this lil' fantasy, and I think it's a useful one
for spreading a modicum of joy whenever possible.
It's all about the fun, here, my friend!
And yes, any and all are welcome to go walking with me!

I still think you were just out trying to find some cold Coronas at a 7-11.
Seriously though, I admire your ability to take risks sometimes. I've suited outside cons before, but I always have made sure I had some sort of safety net in place. I have to learn more courage from you.

To meet you in person (furson?) is on my bucket list, I swear. I'm all the way in Texas but I'll figure it out somehow, lol. I'm always in love with your writing and lovely stories. Anytime I need a pick me up when I'm down, I go to your page and read a few of my favorites you've written. :D
