So that you're prepared and hopefully won't laugh at it too much, I should warn you that this is a first attempt at doing anything like this.
You might have heard that last November I finally started learning the guitar for myself, and this is the result of me experimenting with playing over the bass, drums and "voice" of the last instrumental and end of one of my songs from a couple of years ago. I know I hate it when people push real music off the front page with little experimental uploads, so I'm hoping that this is at least presentable. (Now that I listen to it just before submitting it sounds hopelessly out of tune, but... still.)
I think ironically, what I'm having the most difficulty with the guitar so far (quite apart from barre chords) is the sound engineering side of it, and what to do with the hundreds of dials and switches available to get a sound approaching what I had in mind - much the same difficulty I had with electronic music! This isn't quite there yet - some of it sounds a lot sharper than is really comfortable on the ears, and it's not helped that after just four months I'm not exactly Kai Hansen yet, either. That said, I do quite like the multi-layered conclusion, and you probably will as well seeing as it marks the end of this sonic onslaught.
Nevertheless, if anyone with guitar/recording experience has any pointers for how to go in the right direction, I'd appreciate your comments. This was recorded with an IK Stealthplug, Tracktion 2, and more editing and re-recording than I'd care to admit.

More people are seeing the light of real instruments. And if they're all as good at it as you are, there's still hope for mankind
Seriously though, this is quite impressive. Your playing is technically good and communicates a very passionate feel. Blends in very nicely with the electronically generated parts, too. Faved.

Learning the guitar was something that I'd been meaning to do for ages, mostly because I knew the synthy sound of my music was... distracting, to some people, and didn't really fit the genre I was trying to write for. And the feel of it, like you mentioned, is a large part of that - it's difficult to get a computer to sound like it's putting emotion behind anything.
Thanks for th encouragement - I'll have to spend a few years practicing and then reupload my entire gallery :)

I have unfortunately got into the habit of always using downstrokes (apart from in the scale exercises where I conciously practice alternate picking), so I'm trying to teach myself not to default to downstrokes for everything else. Still very shaky on sweeping - I've a long way to go yet :)
Thanks for offering your advice!

Part of me wanting to learn the guitar was for that reason too, so I could convert my songs into tab format. You could try reading through a couple of beginners' guitar lessons, and downloading the Guitar Pro 5 demo along with tabs so that you can see them "played" by the computer. Even shortly after starting I was beginning to understand better how guitar music is constructed.
