I sometimes feel a bit cynical about the concept of "the sanctity of life." Not to say that life is meaningless and trite by any means, but I tend to scoff at the idea that, in every single circumstance, it should be protected at all costs. Everything that lives will die. Everything that dies will contribute to those who live. Death does not exist without life. Life does not exist without death.
In this way, the Tree of Life is also the Tree of Death.

George Carlin had a bit about the 'sanctity of life' which was rather humorous but boiled down into it being a concept created by the living who wanted to make it wrong to kill so they'd have a better chance to stay alive.
Long segment of his stand-up which has his bit about the sanctity of life in it (around 5:50). Political humor and explicit language ahead~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCWC4sHbIV0&feature=related
