I gave Whitemantis a few thousand thanks when this went up, but I'll just go ahead and do so again here, since it came out so beautifully.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU (+ a lot more)
Whitemantis announced via journal that WanderingPariah had sponsored a detailed picture featuring her geisha mantis Nae and two other characters, whom she was free to pick. The journal said that she'd pick whichever two insect characters were referenced to her which struck her fancy the most and seemed to fit the setting best when dressing in traditional Japanese garb.
I only have one insect character, so Ichi-gou it was. I offered his ref details up, saying it'd be nifty to see him in a more relaxed setting than his usual battle roles and the like.
And it did indeed turn out to be a most spectacular piece. Probably one of the best pieces of gift art I've ever gotten, and which I'm eternally grateful to Whitemantis for picking my character to take part in.
The scene and situation do make me wonder what story could be told about the events that lead to it. Ichi-gou's android nature and usual history of jumping from one dimension and conflict in the Multiverse to the next doesn't really place him in feudal Japan. Mayhap he lost a fight, jumped dimensions to escape, and ended up taking time to recuperate within Nae's walls. What does Nae truly think of the ant visitor who appeared on her doorstep armed with weapons and tools she'd never seen before, who has no scent or pheromones, and despite looking injured shed no blood or ichor, and who healed at a rate that defied biology? Would she voice any of those thoughts and feelings, or would it be improper?
What does the fellow guest of the house, Miho, think of the stranger he's found himself bunking with? Do they get along, or is there friction and mistrust?
And does any of that matter on the night of the scene in question? Or should thoughts of anything else be set aside, while the two watch and appreciate Nae, and let nothing else press any distraction upon them?
