 Okuraorca
This is the first part, second part will be a tutorial showing my art processes. Basically, I threw in as much of my available skill-set for underwater scenes into this piece. Above water scenes need a slightly different skill-set, and I still have a ways to go before I consider myself proficient with the latter.

Well, their scars are not human caused at all actually.
The cause for the little one's scars can be found (or rather, deduced) here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9616356/
For the big ol' bull, it's kinda, something, sorta, but not directly related to this: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9630793/
If you're wondering why I'm being so vague, well, I'd rather not spoil the story that okuraorca laid out. The comic MysticOrca mentioned should help explain a few more things. :)

The fact what the calf might have lost her mum occurred to me as well :(
Poor things indeed. This show that life's not always as bright as we would want it to be (As you unfortunately seems to have experience as well :( )
But that don't take anything to the quality of the picture.

Well, most mammal's cub/calves can't survive without their mum in their first days/weeks/months in the first place.
But it's true what even adult male orcas seem to stay dependent on their mum, as a study has shown that they have less chances at surviving in the following year that the others.

That bull orca has sacrificed so much for the little calf. I salute him, and will use my restoration magic to heal there wounds. Love your style and happy to see that your skills are not only rooted in the adult but also in the reality of the orca species. graith or teeth marks like these are common on older males and females due to the fights that dolphins have.
