
Here's a close-up shot of this dragon tail commission I made, showing the engravings down the spine.
The engravings were done with a laser cutter, which oxidizes the surface of the aluminum to a bright white. Interestingly, the aluminum oxide is significantly stronger than elemental aluminum, so the engravings are very robust.

The weave for the scales is a Japanese 4-in-1 pattern, with the scales being the node rings connected to their neighbors by the normal rings.
