Lynx turned and gazed at Serge, the son from whom he’d been separated for ten long years, and an unspoken understanding passed between them. It was time to join forces, as they had discussed aboard the S.S. Invincible before entering the Sea of Eden to assault Chronopolis. Fate, the twisted computer that had once enslaved his will, was now at their mercy…looming above them still but slumped over with the grievous injuries she had suffered throughout the battle, sparks coruscating and arcing beneath the scale-like metallic plates of her armored interface, head tilted awkwardly to one side, one molten eye twitching spasmodically. Now was the moment to deal the killing blow, before her diagnostic programs had a chance to institute repairs.
Beneath the thick covering of his black robes and breastplate, he could feel sweat trickling through his thick feline pelt, and fatigue ached in him despite the generous musculature with which he’d been endowed—without Fate’s neural connections to his brain, he no longer had limitless stamina and strength. But he had enough left for this, even after the long fight. He had to. He could not allow her to get away with the terrible atrocities she had committed…he could not allow her to manipulate and control the world. Or worse still, his secret fear…that she might once more impose her will on him, turn him into her dark, sadistic puppet.
He would sooner die than let that happen. Which was why, even if it drained his life to do so, he would cast this final spell.
The Arni youth met his golden cat eyes, and instead of the fear and uncertainty that had always greeted Lynx before, he saw only trust, vindication, and a certain sly eagerness. He wanted this, too, and was willing to believe in his father, even after all that had been done to him. Serge truly was a wonderful boy…no, a man now. And a good son…one who had believed he could be saved when no one else even cared, when so many only wished revenge, wished to see him dead. It was only right that he stand by Serge now—and unite as a perfect team to change the world for the better.
Reaching out to clasp Serge’s hand in his paw, he held the other up in one fist before his muzzle, a familiar gesture given new meaning as he reached deep down within himself, tapped into the magic that was imbued in his very essence, the gravitational fields of the Black Element that were his to command. At the same time he could feel the holiness of Serge’s White Element building up within him, a natural chi of divine energy channeled through his denadorite swallow, a power normally anathema to him…yet now that their minds and hearts were one, the two did not annihilate each other, nor did they even conflict. Instead light and dark acted as counterpoints, a yin and yang that formed a surprising harmony, a pair of equal and opposite forces in eternal balance…the primal forces of the universe, pushing and pulling at one another to fuel a great wheel of cosmic power, spinning faster and more furiously as it built to a crescendo of destruction—and rebirth.
First came Lynx’s own shadowy powers, a quantum singularity that drew in all matter around it, even light, a dark sinkhole into which Fate was drawn with a despairing mechanical cry as chilling as it was satisfying. Spiraling ever downward, the floor panels, the consoles, even the extruding arms that connected her to the Frozen Flame were warped and whirled about, until all became Forever Zero. But then, as there can be beginnings in endings, new life arising from death, the final flatline of destruction suddenly exploded with the white-hot, scintillating, shimmering column of light that burst from Serge whenever he summoned Flying Arrow. It was as if, in the loss of one universe, the Big Bang had created a whole new one, hurtling stars, planets, comets, and other stellar detritus out to all corners of creation—and, incidentally, shattered them into miniscule pieces, so far-flung and widely separated they could never be rejoined. It was a stunning display of magic and combative skill never before seen in this world, one which could send an enemy hurtling far into the past or the future, manifesting as it did directly on the axis of the dimensions, sliding fluidly in either direction as it banished its target from the timestream forever.
They called it Time’s Arrow. And it was more than effective…it was catastrophic in its results, leaving nothing but shattered pieces of metal, wiring, glass, and plastic melted and smoldering on the ruined floor of the chamber.
Gazing down as his chest heaved in weariness but also a justifiable sense of accomplishment, Lynx watched one last twitch in the irising aperture that had once been an eye of the supercomputer. “Nooo! How could you...?” The voice was desperate, distorted, and fading into static. “I... FATE... the Goddess of Fate... was not meant to die...” Yet with that last wail, the light in her eye socket went out, leaving only a defunct heap of scrap metal.
Lynx smiled cruelly down at her, letting go of his son’s hand to cross his arms over his broad chest. “You always did have delusions of grandeur. We choose our own fate, now.”

So let me make one thing clear: I am very much aware that Lynx is the villain of the game. (Whether he has his own independent will or is merely a puppet and biological body for Fate is a matter of debate, but he's still clearly a bad guy.) What is also true, however, is that everything he did in the game was either the result of Fate's machinations, corruption, and reprogramming, or the fact that when she changed Wazuki into him, she did so by combining him with the demon panther that attacked Serge, a creature that was her own creation and was in fact a heartless, evil predator. Meaning that Wazuki himself is not the villain, and pretty much blameless in what happened--the worst that can be ascribed to him is overzealousness, that he was so determined to save Serge he made the mistake of trusting and getting too close to the Frozen Flame and Fate, and that when he thought he'd lost his son or was close to doing so, this despair gave her the inroads to possess him. That all being the case, if there was any of Wazuki left in Lynx that could be resurrected, I was pretty sure that a) he could be saved and redeemed and b) he'd want revenge on Fate for what she did to him and made him do to Serge.
Therefore, assume for a moment that when Serge (in Lynx's body) fought Dark Serge at Home World's Fort Dragonia, instead of him simply fleeing after the battle he got knocked out, rendered comatose, or what have you, and this broke Fate's control over him. Then assume that instead of Serge being reborn from a baby, the Tear just switched them back to their old bodies again. Lynx/Wazuki, remembering who he is and filled with remorse, would then join your party for good. And wouldn't it be awesome if his Lv. 7 Tech could be combined with Serge's? ^_^
Someday soon I will probably write the fic describing the events I outlined above. For now, here's Rehgan's incredibly awesome rendition of what that Double Tech and subsequently badass battle would be like. Ah, Turned Against Their Masters is so much fun when it's a former villain doing it to the Big Bad!
For added effect, here's the actual boss music from this fight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ym.....Y&index=54

Oh dude, you have definitely captured what I wish could have always happened, but for plot reasons couldn't. Lynx was never to blame. It was just FATE traipsing around in Serge's dad's altered body all that time. Stupid computer, it just didn't understand, though I did pity the fact it only wanted to know what being alive meant. It spent so much time in an organic body that it relished the experience.
Guess I'm just a sucker for characters with daddy issues, and said daddies. ^_^
And yeah that's true, I did manage to have a bit of sympathy for her, but the things she did in the process just made it so I couldn't forgive her. Not to mention that sure, she was trying to find out what being alive means and enjoying the experience...but that included all the negative aspects of being alive too, so that instead of just getting to sense things, to love and befriend and care for others, she learned and expressed hate, rage, manipulation, deceit, cruelty, dispassion, and death. Combine this with her being all about logic over emotion and thinking the ends justified the means, and...
Of course I actually read one fic which proposed the notion she knew exactly what she was doing and did it all in order to make you hate her and destroy her...all so you could be strong enough to kill the Dragon Gods and the Time Devourer and save the world, as she knew she could not do, and then live your life in freedom. I don't know if I buy it, but it's certainly possible.

Well that scene in Viper Manor pretty much screamed "I am your father, Serge!" but I imagine having Lynx for a father would be pretty awesome. I won't deny he was one of my favorite characters in the game along with Van, Draggy, big momma Macha and others. :D
That sounds like one interesting fan fiction, like the computer got tired of watching our species and wanted us to grow in our own way. I have a CC doujin (an actual physical I bought years ago at AX) and it shows FATE-Lynx tormenting poor Lucca, before the genius girl puts a bullet through her own head so that the computer doesn't learn anything from her. Luccia somehow finds out about it too. A shame the artist's website doesn't work anymore because I wanted to know more about it.

You mean when he was on the balcony, holding out his hand and offering Serge to join him? Yeahhhhhh... :P Although actually it seemed even more obvious to me at Fort Dragonia: first he says ten years ago a part of him died (that could be either the panther or Wazuki) but then he says Serge can't deny him because that would be "denying his very existence". Hmm I wonder what what could mean? But yeah, it would be pretty awesome. I can see Marge accepting him just fine (she did Serge in his body, after all), and that could help the people of Arni get over their prejudices. Maybe they'd start trading with the new Marbule?
My favorites were definitely Van, Glenn, Macha, and Riddel, as well as Harle, Kid, and yes Serge himself. But really I liked most of them, there were only a few I couldn't stand or was neutral about.
I should show you a couple of nice fics I found on FF.net. One is Serge as Lynx, trying to deal with his new self, and being comforted by Van; the other is after he gets restored and is talking with Pip about why none of his friends would believe or stand by him.
*nods* Indeed! And wow, that sounds dark, depressing, but at the same time rather badass. How very like Lucca.

Yup, that scene. I wonder what it would have been like if they offered you a choice to take his hand. Dang, first bad ending you could run into. And yeah, having a demi-human husband could very well help the people of El Nido move on from their hateful prejudices (though the awesomely musical Marbule restoration fixed that up neatly).
I agree. There were some duds I didn't really care for, like Funguy and Turnip. Heck, even girl-next-door Leena had more substance to her whereas most people wrote her off as "an inconsistent girlfriend" (she's also another of my favorites due to beating the shit out of things with a frying pan and slapping enemies + scolding them).
I know which fics you mean. I read them. ;3
Yeah, Lucca is just the best. There's plenty of reasons you don't take her out of the party in Trigger, ever. :D

Hah yeah, other than of course Kid creating the Acacian Empire. :P And yes, the song did fix things overall, but I'm not sure how much that would affect the views of people elsewhere in the world, particularly Arni.
Hah, yeah. I'd say the only ones I didn't really care for (aside from the two you named) were Marcy, Korcha and Mel, Poshul, Mojo, NeoFio, Skelly, and Pierre. And yeah, Leena wasn't the bossy bitch so many think she was, at least not the Another version of her. Indeed, she's one of the few Blues with a physical attack Tech, and her healing (especially the ability to restore Elements) was a godsend.
Oh? Yay! Did you also read the unfinished novelization someone tried to do, Dreamwatch?
Lucca was pretty much my favorite CT character, though Frog was right up there too.

Like all things my friend, it's something I imagine took time for them to open up to. Racism and prejudice don't just disappear overnight, as the Tales series has so often demonstrated to me. Humans and nonhumans get tricked into hating each other by some outside party and have to learn to team up to win against said party. It takes a lot of convincing (such as the Kobold situation in Suikoden 2 or the Gajuma in Tales of Rebirth).
I'd liked Marcy for at least having great stats for a nine year old and on my very first run she was a great backup healer and attacking mage (50+ magic characters are the kings and queens of element usage). Her whole family history was pretty crazy though (being related to Nikki, just wow). Mel was okay, as being the only Yellow Element with a decent magic score (and another thief can't hurt) plus she becomes zippy as hell if you give her the Stardust Cape, Defender Plus and Winged Shoes (though I did that to every child-sized character and it really makes them unstoppable at times).
The rest you mentioned, yeah not so much. Pierre only really becomes decent with all the Hero gear loaded on, but that means he needs that stuff specifically as a crutch to be any good and you have to wait till the near end to give him the Hero's Sword, which is too much time wasted in between acquiring it and getting Serge's body back. His stats are also sadly mediocre even if you keep him for every Star Level up and subsequent smidgen training (I was hoping he'd have decent spell power at least, but my 99 Star file had him at an average 42 by that point). I guess I was reminded too much of Milich from Suikoden, who started the trend of aristocrats having high magic power. XD
Dreamwatch, it sounds familiar, but I'm not sure.
Frog was boss. You likely know this, but what do you think of the fact he had a foul mouth in the original Japanese script of CT? Instead of talking like Cyan did in FF6, he basically spoke as disrespectfully as he could to everyone at every opportunity. After seeing him so well-mannered, it's kind of hard to imagine. ^^;
Ah I do so enjoy talking about great classic gaming memories with good friends. <3

Oh I agree, to be realistic it has to take time. Which is exactly my point, the song couldn't have magically fixed everything, and every little bit (like Marge suddenly having a demi-human husband) helps.
I don't deny Marcy had great stats and techs, in fact a lot of the characters I didn't like or was neutral about did. I just couldn't stand her as a character, between her annoying Valley Girl speech and her being a spoiled brat. :P As for Mel, she wasn't really that bad, but her also being somewhat bratty combined with being a thief made her a lot like Yuffie (whom I didn't like until post-City of the Ancients). I admit she made a good thief though, especially paired up with Kid.
Dreamwatch has been allowed to die, sadly, with the party not having reached Termina yet. But it had some wonderful development and characterization for Serge, Kid, and Leena, it got Glenn and Riddel exactly right, and it had this absolutely chilling and disturbing scene where Lynx spies on Riddel while she's bathing and then comes in to taunt/seduce/threaten her until stopped by Glenn.
LOL no I did not know that actually...yeah, I can't see that, the polite and formal version of him is just too ingrained. And I'm not sure I'd have liked him if he was rude.
Me too. ^_^

Indeed. Plus it would have been one of the rare beauty and the beast moments in a JRPG that cement the relationship more. Marge was the most awesome mother I'd seen in a long time in games, just like Chrono's mother, who thought it was perfectly normal for her son to be friends with a princess, a frog, a powerful sorcerer, a robot and a cavewoman. :)
I like that they used that word program to give everyone a distinct way of speaking (since in the Japanese version, everyone spoke the same with the same politeness and respect levels toward everyone else, which would have been really dull to follow considering the size of the script). Marcy's valley girl talk was a tad...out there, but I guess when you have Russian, French, German, fairy teehee, doggy lisping, and caveman, it just fits in amongst all the wacky dialects. XD
Dang, that does sound good. Though that isn't something I'd imagine the great Lynx doing. XD
I agree. He has every facet of being a knight done. Unless he was going to be a black knight, being an ass to everyone just doesn't define Frog very well. Besides they had to change his style of speaking since saying rude things would have come out really wrong in English, especially considering the phenomenal whitewashing of things in the 90s.
Hehe. We should chat it up more. The things I could tell you about my gaming experiences... :)

Yes, I agree so much! While I did like Crono's mother and thought she was funny ("Toad will do, madam", anyone?) and awesome, I think Marge had a little more depth and development to her. Especially in the scene when you go back to her as Lynx. Also don't forget Crono's mom had no problems with him being friend with the mad scientist's nutty daughter. :P
Hmm, some of the different dialects and ways of speaking they came up with I found annoying or intrusive, but I agree the program to translate into the dialects was pretty cool.
I don't know, I could see him doing it if he thought it would get him something (in this case, increasing the enmity between Acacia and Porre), or if he was doing it as part of Fate's ongoing program to experiment on and manipulate humanity. Also keep in mind he's still the demon panther, a predator. The scene in question involved him killing a bird just because he could, because it was "natural" to do so, and then taking her arm (after hypnotizing her a little as he did Kid) and tracing out the veins, alternately to cause pleasure or pain--two sides of the coin again.
That's true enough. Of course if he had been rude that might explain a little more why Magus hated him so much.
I bet you could! Particularly since my gaming experience is rather limited.

You just don't see awesome mothers like that as much anymore. XD
Indeed. Just a nice little incentive to make the U.S. release more enticing, even though I was already enticed by the first "Summer of Adventure" promotion anyway, so I didn't more convincing to get Chrono Cross, Legend of Mana and Threads of Fate. :D
Ah, okay that makes more sense. He was doing it that way, not being a perv. Whew, what a relief. The way you described it sounds like that official artwork of Lynx holding Kid with that sadistic feline smile of his.
Perhaps. I wonder if Frog spoke that badly in his childhood too. He must have been a real punk if so. XD
I'd be happy to recommend so many games too. ;3

XD

True. :(
Well there was a slight pervy element to it as well, since when she was in the pool he breathed on her/licked her ear from behind; the scene was actually set up with a lot of suspense, like a scene in a horror movie. He also watched her sleep through one of his Shadow Cats, and asked Harle to report to him what she dreamed about. Perhaps this seems a bit too OOC for a character who otherwise never seemed sexual in any way, however much I might have wished otherwise (*coughs* except toward Serge, Foe Yay anyone?), but I can still see him doing it. But yes, it does sound like that official art now that you mention it, that may have been where the author got the idea, crossed with the scene in the Disney Three Musketeers movie where Richelieu approached the queen while she was bathing.
LOL he's even more likely to have done so then, you know how kids are. :P
Indeed, though I don't have a lot of time these days and am usually reluctant to start new games since they scare me a bit. :P

Lynx is just the sexy feline demi-human who got one-upped by all the popular ones at the time and even now. Actually I'm surprised I don't do see more naughty art of Serge/Lynx together. It actually screams to be made considering how that sort of 34 pairing's been done to death so often before. Yes, it would be incest, but that hasn't stopped anyone before. XD
Most likely true.
Yeah, I know a lot of them seem like the same old thing from yesteryear but if you take some risks, you're bound to find something good among the modern releases. :)

He certainly is, and he did get forgotten...I am guessing through a combination of hate for Cross (due to Trigger fans being pissed about it not really being a sequel and what it did to the CT characters, and others just not liking the mind screw plot and large number of characters without much development) and later games/characters having better graphics. And I have to say that even knowing he was the bad guy, I still couldn't resist his sexiness. Let's just say that while this fic scene with Riddel gave me the willies, if he'd been asking me whether I wanted pleasure from him, well...
As for your specific question, I am not sure why there isn't, except for the fact Serge is technically underage in some areas and the fact he's human so to some people it'd be like bestiality. And the incest thing, though after Fate changed Wazuki a case could be made there really isn't a genetic link any more. Anyway... *coughs* I actually like male-male incest, and as for Serge/Lynx, you can expect a Rule 34 pic of them coming up from me very soon...
Oh it isn't so much about them being the same old thing, but the opposite--that each game has a different battle system you have to learn. That rather panics me a lot of the times. I know you have to take risks, but I still have to work really hard to make myself do it. I will be doing so soon though--after years of dithering about it I am going to finally play FFVIII, and thanks to one of my mates nudging me I'm going to try IX as well.

Yeah, I will admit Cross is more of a spiritual successor rather than a direct sequel, but it was still a work of art for its time. While I never viewed Lynx as someone I want to have me in his personal "lion's den", he definitely had it in spades as a mysterious antagonist with unique motives. He was well written and making him a feline man was more interesting than a...green alien like in the original Radical Dreamers.
Well he is 17, so it's not like he's a preteen or anything. Plus, he's pretty well built for his age (must be all the swallow weapon training and boat steering he was raised on, that's gotta build up your muscles doing it everyday like that). I admit, when I saw Serge nude in the Dragon Tear rebirth cutscene, I was like "Damn, I want abs like that!" And Lynx has abs pressing against that waist pad of his, which means his father is likely even more built than his kid. And really now? Oho, you sneaky beast you. X3
FF8's magic junction system isn't really complicated, it's just terribly obtrusive. You can't actually use your stocked spells or you have to restock them to get the maximum effect of equipping 100 to one stat. It's a pain, so you end up just hoarding magic and using summons and weapons to attack. Good thing summoning is infinite. Basically, without Guardian Forces equipped to their bodies, Squall and his party are a pretty ordinary bunch of humans with lackluster stats despite being trained in military schools and such.

Agreed. And I also have to say that in many ways, the game would have been better if it weren't a sequel due to what it did to the characters and plot of Trigger, and had just been a stand-alone game. The only really good thing to come of it, Trigger-wise (unless you subscribe to the theory that the end of the game not only joined the worlds but undid everything that went wrong since the Zeal summoned Lavos including the fall of Guardia) was saving Schala.
Oh yes, Lynx made a wonderful antagonist. And...a green alien, really? LOL!
True, but to some people anything under 18 is off-limits, and in places where 18 is the legal age of adulthood anything with a 17-year-old is still involving a minor and thus statutory rape. :/ But yes he's extremely well-built, but as you say I imagine a fisherman's life is a great way to build up muscle. And based on what we saw of Wazuki he was stacked even before he became Lynx (Heroic Build indeed!).
Trust me, you'll like the pic.
Yeah that's what I've been told, and I have someone on hand who can help me if I get stuck as well as the strategy guide. Hopefully it will go well.

Indeed, and ever since CT, I've considered Schala one of the the greatest self-sacrificing characters in video game history next to Lion Magnus of the Tales series and Megaman X. I also loved the good ending, since it was open to interpretation. Maybe a "Schala" exists among us in the modern world. Maybe Schala herself hasn't stopped looking for Serge. It was an amazing game from start to end.
Yeah, in the original Radical Dreamers, Lynx was an alien thing who held Riddel hostage. Interestingly, Viper Manor belonged to him and not General Viper. http://chrono.wikia.com/wiki/Lynx
Hehe, yeah, I admit I'm a little jealous. I wish I had been that built at 17. And as for the pic, trust me, I've never disliked anything you had done man. ;3
Ah, you've got the official guide too? Cool, it's pretty accurate and isn't missing anything you'll need to know for any side quests, so happy FF8 gaming! :D

Agreed, I haven't heard of a single person who didn't like Schala or wasn't moved by what she did. Personally I often think everything that went wrong in Cross was worth it if it saved her. And if she did indeed undo all the wrongs when she rejoined the worlds, then I don't see a reason to object. But I guess I am more reasonable than most rabid CT fans. :P I too liked the implication of the ending, though my mate Yama noted that he actually thought the idea of a game/anime/movie about Schala actually searching modern Tokyo would be pretty cool and I think I agree. ^_^
Huh, I wonder if that's where the author of Dreamwatch got the idea for Lynx menacing Riddel? But yeah I think I remember reading the original story had the manor being Lynx's, but I never heard of the alien bit.
Gah, me too. Ah well, just gotta stop being lazy and see what I can do about it now. :P And wow, really? I'm flattered1
It turns out we'd had the guide for years and I just didn't know it. :P Thanks, I hope I will!

Ooh, a Schala's Journey anime/manga would be pretty neat. I like that idea. :)
Yeah, the alien part was the only thing a tad off-base for me, but considering the loopy cast of CC, perhaps an alien isn't the weirdest thing the party's dealt with. It was interesting to see Serge "talk" and play instruments though. :)
I don't have a gym membership anymore myself and even when I did, I didn't commit myself as fully as I should have. Of course, it got harder to go when I had student teaching too. It's possible to just train your body at home provided you have some heavy stuff at home to lift.
You're welcome. :)

Oh I liked him well enough, he was adorable and his Techs were pretty awesome if a bit Voltron-ish. Not that that is bad, but it added to the anachronisms of the game. I was just pointing out him being there makes an alien Lynx a bit less strange. And of course Lavos is an alien beast too, so...
BTW, I have been doing some writing on the fic to go with this pic. Slow but fun. I'm about to get to the reverse body-switch. Let's just say it involves the same mural about evolution Serge sees, and Lynx having a lovely little trip down memory lane of all the crap Fate made him do.

Agreed, in all respects. I have always heard the game was rushed in its final stages, which is both why the ending was so confusing/improperly explained and why it was all done in a quick infodump. It'd be awesome to know how it would have been if they'd given the proper time and attention it.
I love your version of the storyline. This should have happened in the game. It always maddens me that you can't retrieve Lynx as a playable character after you defeat FATE...
Still love the Chrono Trigger/Cross games though, I just need to get the PS2 fixed so it will play them :P
