Saint Patrick was a Roman Britain-born Christian missionary and is the patron saint of Ireland along with Brigid of Kildare and Columba. When he was about sixteen he was captured by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Ireland, where he lived for six years before escaping and returning to his family. He entered the church, as his father and grandfather had before him, becoming a deacon and a bishop. He later returned to Ireland as a missionary, working in the north and west of the island, but little is known about the places where he actually worked and no link can be made with Patrick and any church. By the eighth century he had become the patron saint of Ireland. The Irish monastery system evolved after the time of Patrick and the Irish church did not develop the diocesan model that Patrick and the other early missionaries had tried to establish.
The only reason I don;t like that day is because some faggots tried to pinch me when I was clearly wearing green....and I thought they were being gay, and yet they were....
shame on them....I think we should all pass a law taht from now on no pinching and anyone who pinches deserves a smack to the face,.

The leprechaun was actually a type of large rabbit (Native to the isle) whose hide was highly valued in ancient Ireland, which lead to the idea of the pot o' gold.... it was hunted to extinction clearly, rare and highly sought after does not work out well for an animal.
Srsly, it's troo, red it in the bibble. :)

I agree with you you feel with these shananigins. Oops, I said it. Dang how we Americans commercialize and exploit a holiday, especially a foreign one. Guess that would include Easter and Christmas, but at least they're not nation-specific. -.-; I really wonder why St George's Day (England) or St. Andrew's (Scotland) has never been such a big thing...
