There was a squirrel in that tree and he wanted to herd it so badly but it just would not come down and cooperate.

I was told pure bred border collie by the people who abandoned him but I think he's a mix with something.
Here's a full body pic of him I took the same day.

His tail usually is curled up over his back but he was herding a squirrel.
The tip of his tail is crooked so it always bends like that, I assume he broke it before I got him probably as a puppy.
He's 7 years old now, I've had him for 6 years.

He almost looks like a Mudi/BC cross to me. Granted it maybe not be plausible with that fact they are a rare breed.
It might just be the fur that's throwing me off really, has he been shaved at any point in his life? Double coated breeds who have been shaved completely some times get that woolly look because their guard hairs have been destroyed in the shaving leaving only a frizzy undercoat.
Either way, have a Mudi.

I had him shaved the beginning of this past summer because he had some nasty matts from my ex (he was his dog before when we were together but he abandoned him shortly after he threw me out and I adopted him in February). But he has always had curly hair on his hips, shoulders and around his face like that ever since my ex got him. I'm unsure about his first year of life. He was an obvious abuse victim and tried to rip my exes arm off for pointing a fake gun at me.
I'd swear he was a Mudi cross then if it wasn't so implausible. You don't happen to live or lived in Hungary or any of it's surrounding nations do you? xD
Mudi aren't really seen out of Europe. Lovely breed though, I've had the pleasure of meeting a few over in the UK at some UKC trials.
However I'd advise at never shaving him again. If he's got that frizzy a coat now it's a good chance it might get really bad with the next regrowth.
Doubled coated dogs should never be shaved save in cases like your dog's, mats too dense to comb out without causing great pain to the dog. Poor baby though, he's got a good mama now though. :3 And again, a beautiful boy.
