This is a piece that has been floating around in my mind for a while now.
Zane and Danny oft claim they are brothers...but in truth, they aren't related. Some of Zane's recent (yes, he can in theory, with some effort, trace his lineage WAAAAAY back) ancestors were Nazis in WWII...while Danny's Jewish family fled Germany at the same time.
Since Zane couldn't care less about wether or not his grandparents were Nazis, and Danny no longer believes in the Jewish faith, neither of them has ever bothered to give a damn about their origins. However, prettymuch everyone in the game has gotten a small snicker out of the irony, ooc-ly.
This was originally intended to be a silly picture...Zane dressed as one of the Schutzstaffel, hugging Danny who was intended to be dressed as a Rabbi. It was meant to be cartoony, and funny, and amusing.
It ended up having some meaning. No more cartoony, no more funny.
See, I got to thinking about terminology. In the Werewolf: the Apocalypse game, you can burn rage and spend gnosis. It has the implication that Rage is ever-flowing, volatile, and firey...and it is. It also implies that Gnosis is like treasure, hard to come by, hard to find, and something to be hoarded and guarded with one's life...and it is.
Danny burns with rage, in the game. Zane spends gnosis, in the game. The sheer irony hit me, and inspired the serious mental image of Danny on fire...and Zane holding the torch.
He's also holding a paintbrush. In the game, "Brushes of the Ancients" are magical artifacts, used for divining things. I felt it appropriate...plus as Danny's creator mentioned, the Germans hoarded art of all kinds as treasures. Yet more guarded-gnosis and guarded-mysticism symbolism.
When it went from humour to seriousness, I axed the colour. I feel that full colour would have deeply ruined the meaning...plus I don't want this to be too disturbing. It's already thought-provoking enough as is. So, I attempted to use screentones. I don't really know how they are meant to be used, but...I like the way the shading turned out. I really do.
And on a completely shallow side note...Zane as an SS officer is fucking hot. I don't agree with the WWII Nazis, nor do I condone their terrible acts...but you have to admit, they had some style. Their uniforms were droolworthy.
