So this semester in college I'm taking my very first etching class and for our first project my professor instructed us to come up with a sketch or collage based upon the works of famous classic etching artists from the past but with a modern spin on it; i.e. we could choose to simply copy the original artist's work but only focusing on a small aspect of it (such as only the dog in the image and not the humans, for example), copy the original image altogether but distort it, collage pieces of multiple artworks together to create a new image, or simply create a new work of art altogether drawing inspiration from the masters' works. I'm not the type that can be happy simply copying someone else's work, master or not, so I knew I wanted to create a piece that was all my own. While researching a few artists, I came across Albrecht Durer's etching of St. Jerome and was inspired by the lion lazily sleeping beside a small dog in the front. I immediately knew I had stumbled upon the inspiration I needed and could not resist the temptation to use my Waniyetu for something like this, so I sat down and drew Luneia in her feral form (winter coat) lazily sleeping beside Lumine (who is a juvenile, by the way, so there is a reason for the massive size difference :P), protectively watching over him while he dreams away. I am SO happy with how this turned out! ^_^ My teacher LOVED it! I can't wait to see how the etching of this comes out in the end! I'll be able to make prints of this when it's complete for anyone interested in one! :D
This is, of course, a work in progress; the finished piece will be the etching itself and the prints made from it. I will post those here as soon as they're done! ^_^ This will probably be moved to scraps once the finished images are posted. I wish my scanner could have captured the image better, but what can you do? XP
And in case anyone is wondering, although I have no children of my own (yet) in real life, I've been toying with the idea of making Lumine Luneia's son, so any maternal feelings this image may inspire are intentional. ;P
Luneia, Lumine, the Waniyetu dragon species, and all artwork are © me,
menei. Do not copy, reproduce, re-upload, or use in any way. You may not create your own Waniyetu either. Thank you.
