Maggiore (Major), 362ima Squadriglia, 22o gruppo, Italian air force, Autumn 1943
A Regia aeronautica pilot disembark from his Reggiane Re.2005 'Saggitario'. note that Italian parachutes were strapped to pilot's back, unlike RAF parachute which slung lower on pilot's back, with pilot sitting on it in-flight. To accommodate this Italian aircrafts usually had seat with recess for the parachute, nicknamed 'vasca' (bathtub) by pilots. The rank of Maggiore was indicated by the one large stripe and one narrow stripe. The diamond braid was unique to the air force
The Reggiane Re.2005 was one of three 'Serie 5' fighter built around German DB605 engine, with the other two being FIAT G.55 and Macchi C.205. The Re.2005 differs from other Serie 5 fighter by having larger triangular shaped tail fin, other than that, all of them were basically similar

ahhhhhhh.... *slaps her forehead.... I was thinking of another with robots... my apologizes...
I write all sorts of things aviation and was very taken by this portrait and also mention of the often overlooked Italian aircraft...
littlenapoleon is my usual illustrator: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7554403/
and I do enjoy the research....

Yeah... i do love lesser-known aircrafts. some of them were actually far superior to other popular aircrafts, yet only one of their kind ever leave drawing board. Martin Baker MB.5 was one of the example; heavily armed, better cockpit layout, good accessibility and maintenance, and also it was faster than Spitfire Mk.XIV. S/L Janusz Zurakowski, one of the best aerobatic pilot in the UK even considered that MB.5 "was better in many ways to spitfire", yet MB.5 never entered production line and only 1 (one) example ever built. even the manufacturer, Martin-Baker aircraft Co.Ltd. is almost forgotten as a planemaker.
Which historical artist doesn't love research? Thank you again anyway!

I ran across one tidbit that might explain that particular phenomenon... one of the things that helped the Brits win that battle was the fact that they concentrated on the production of only two fighter models which concentrated all of their resources - the Hurricane and the Spitfire. Another thing - noticed on 'Secrets of the Museum' - a female movie star (I forget her name) was very good at inventing and math. In 1940 she actually invented an improved guidance system for torpedoes - it was totally dismissed by the war department because obviously she couldn't know what she was talking about. Later they developed her system for an unbreakable radio... history is full of stupidity.

She was Hedy Lamarr, she invented Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum, a method of transmitting radio signals by rapidly switching a carrier among many frequency channels, this system was highly resistant to narrowband interference (jamming) as it switches between wide range of carrier frequency and were to be used on radio controlled torpedo which could easily be jammed by broadcasting interference at the frequency of the control signal. it ws one of the first ECCM system in anti-submarine warfare
