I won't say that I'm proud of this story, but I will say that I surprised at how naturally it came to me. This is little story that actually sums up a slight subplot with my PCA team, Team Driller. It features Kody Dakota and Jennifer Marine and is a sequel to my submission to
vjohnson's Spring Break project. I think I've done a pretty good job so that makes sense on it's own.

Taking Chances: Jennifer and Kody
Jennifer paced nervously in the locker room for Team Driller. Practice had ended nearly a full ten minutes prior and she had just finished changing. Johnathan and Gabrielle had already left, leaving the buizel alone. Besides her, the only other one in the locker room, well, shower room, was the team leader, Kody.
She had asked the sandshrew to stay after practice, telling Kody that she had something she wanted to talk to her about. Something that was very important to her and that the buizel needed to get off of her chest.
When Jennifer had made her request, she had been so confident. She was set in her desire to confess to Kody. Yet now...Now she wasn't so certain anymore. As she paced, more questions started to build up inside of her, filling the buizel with doubt. While before she had been certain of Kody's hidden feelings, now that certainty had fled her.
Worry began to gnaw at the pit of Jennifer's stomach. The fear that what she had to say, what she wanted and felt she should say, would change the team's dynamic for better or for worse. It was the for worse part that had Jennifer worried so.
She knew that the team meant a lot to Kody. That the sandshrew had gone through a lot over the last few months. From finding herself the sole member remaining of her team to recruiting new members, to the stress of being team leader, it all had been taking a toll on Kody. Jennifer was afraid that what she had to say might drive a wedge between them, possibly even cause a rift so wide that it would tear the team apart. Jennifer didn't want to see that happen, she'd seen it far too often during her freshman and sophomore years.
Jennifer had considered Kody to be her closest friend. Truly, she would do anything to protect that friendship. Without her realizing it though, that friendship had lead to stronger feelings in the buizel.
At first, she had tried to simply ignore the feelings, chalking them up to foolish fantasies and an uncertainty of their friendship. Yet, as the months began to pass, the feelings began to strengthen as she watched Kody take on the responsibilities of leadership. Before she fully realized it, Jennifer had fallen in love with the sandshrew.
Even with this realization, Jennifer never let on just how much she was interested in Kody. Since the day they had met, she had always been openly flirtatious with Kody. It gotten to point where it was game between them, nothing more and nothing less. While Kody never flatly turned down Jennifer's advances, she had never taken them seriously either. In Jennifer's defense, though, she had never let on that she had serious feelings for Kody before.
Now, however, she wanted to change that. That was why she had asked Kody to stay after practice so she could speak privately to her. Jennifer knew that she couldn't hold these feelings hidden inside her any longer. Kody deserved to know how she felt about her, Jennifer knew this. She just could never get the courage to really say so.
A series of events had given her that courage. A call in to the school's radio station, a talk with her father over spring break, even discussing her feelings with two of her closest friends, all had finally lead her to this point.
The sound of the shower turning off caught the buizel's attention and she felt her heart skip a beat. Very soon it would be time. Time to cast off the charade she had been playing and end the games. For better or worse, she would try to bring a resolution to her feelings.
It was another five minutes before Kody exited the shower and entered the main locker room proper. As Jennifer watched the sandshrew enter, she felt her heart skip a few beats. Same as she did every time she saw Kody after a shower.
Kody whistled cheerfully as she dried her hair, the sandshrew wearing a pair of white panties and bra that Jennifer found absolutely adorable. She smiled at Jennifer as she stepped over to her locker and opened it.
“You said you wanted to speak to me,” Kody stated, taking out her t-shirt from her locker and slipping it on. “What was it about?”
Jennifer licked her lips and swallowed nervously. Finally the time had arrived. Her voice cracked slightly as she spoke. “Y-yeah,” she said softly, “I did.” She licked her lips again, finding them unusually dry. Her heart beat faster in her chest and she was sure that it would burst out at any given moment.
Kody seemed to sense the buizel's nervousness. She was in the middle of slipping her pants on when she looked up at her friend, a look of confusion and slight concern in her brown eyes. “Is something the matter?” She asked. “Not like you to be so...reserved.”
Jennifer met the sandshrew's eyes, saw the concern there, and nearly broke down. Emotions flooded through her like a tidal wave. Any doubts she might have had about her own personal feelings towards her team leader were washed away. Before she knew it, words were pouring from her mouth.
In a torrent, she began to confess her love for Kody. She poured her heart out, telling the sandshrew about the way she felt when they first met. The uncertainty she had of Kody's ability to lead, the fact that even then she had found the sandshrew to be cute. She explained how that uncertainty had melted away as their friendship began to build and how, for Jennifer, that friendship had begun to form into deeper feelings of respect and love. Finally she told Kody the reason why she flirted the way she did, why she presented it has a game. That it was a way to cover real feelings and yet let them out at the same time.
By the time she had finished, tears had begun to trail down the buizel's cheeks and she buried her face in her hands.
To her credit, Kody remained silent during Jennifer's confession. Her gentle face showing no hint of anger, repulsion, or disgust. When Jennifer had finished, Kody sat down next to her, looking towards the lockers. After a few exaggerated seconds, she placed an arm around Jennifer's waist and pulled her into hug, stroking the back of the buizel's head.
They remained like for well over a full minute, Jennifer burrowing her face into Kody's shoulder wile the sandshrew gently stroking her hair. At length, Jennifer sniffled and pulled away from Kody. Her blue eyes were bloodshot and her cheeks were tear stained. She looked away from the sandshrew, choosing instead to look at the floor.
“I'm sorry,” she said softly between sniffs. “I didn't mean to break down like that...I just...just...” tears began to form in her eyes once more.
Kody reached over and wiped the threatening tears away. She wasn't sure what to say, she wasn't sure of her own feelings. Finally she decided that the full truth would be the best way to go.
“I understand,” she said softly. “Why you have held this back and why wanted to keep your flirtations as a game. I'm, touched, that you feel this way about me. That you truly feel this way about me, Jen. I...I just don't know how I feel about you.”
Jennifer blinked and looked up at the sandshrew slowly, her blue eyes filled with confusion.
Kody gave a slight smile before answering the buizel's unspoken question. “I admit, I like it when you flirt with me. I find it nice, relaxing even. That you can be that way with me despite my outward coldness, I guess I view it as a sign that I'm doing something right as a leader, as a friend. It's just that...well, I'm not sure how I feel about you.”
Jennifer gave a soft sigh. She had expected this answer, though she had expected to be harsher than Kody was delivering it.
“Hey now,” Kody stated, taking note of Jennifer's sigh and dejected state. “I'm not sure of my feelings and I'm not fully convinced of yours. I know you have a relationship with Ryuen and Krissy of Team Prestidigitation. I'm not surprised to think of you as being a very open individual when it comes to actual relations.”
She gave a sigh and looked towards the ceiling before continuing. “I'm just not sure if I could handle that. I don't know if I could handle sharing you with anyone. I'm not sure if I could handle being in a relationship with anyone.”
Jennifer nodded and stood up slowly. “I...I understand.”
Kody looked up at the buizel. “However,” she started, standing up slowly and taking Jennifer's hand in her own. “However, that doesn't mean I'm not willing to give it shot.”
Jennifer's eyes went wide in shock. Had Kody just said what she thought she said?
Kody, gave a very slight smile. “Please, don't look to far into this, Jen. I love as a friend, and that will never change. There's just a lot about myself that I unsure of. I'm willing to give a relationship with you a shot. Just...don't ask me to join you when you are with Ryuen and Krissy, please.”
Jennifer nodded numbly. She felt her legs get weak beneath her and her breath shorten. This was more than she had hoped. She was ready to accept a denial and instead found herself the recipient of her fondest desire. Well, sort of.
Though it wasn't verbally said, Kody had hinted at it. She wanted to take this slow. Very slow. A date or two to see where things would lead. Jennifer was willing to take as slow as Kody wanted. For her, a great weight had finally been lifted off her chest, two great weights even. She had been worried about bringing the subject of Ryuen and Krissy up with Kody, but the sandshrew had thankfully taken care of that for her.
She watched Kody finish getting dressed. They would go slow, but Jennifer knew the first steps had finally been taken. Although it had been nerve wracking, she was glad she had taken the chance to tell Kody how she felt.
