On September 8th 1923, The US Navy suffered its greatest loss of ships during peacetime. That Evening in the fog shrouded , several US Destroyers ran aground in Honda Point near the Santa Barbera Channel. 7 Destoyers were lost, 2 damaged. Forever known as the Honda Point Disaster.

The top left photo shows the USS Young, USS Delphy, USS Woodbury
Top Right shows the USS Chauncey and the USS Woodbury
Bottom left The USS Chauncey and the USS Woodbury again
Bottom right the USS Young, USS Delphy and the USS Woodbury in the background.
These photos were taken by a photographer stationed on board the USS Pennsylvania that fateful day. And these are the originals.
I have another, better shot of the Chauncey in my collection, along with a Tug that was wrecked rescuing the destroyers.

It is Navy. I'm a US Navy Commander. That was the Summer Dress White uniform, also known as "chokers" as it has the high standing collar. Navy regs now are that one should wear the ribbons instead of medals except for change of command ceremonies and higher events. The ribbon bars should be worn as an equivalent to coat and tie (which I was wearing a tie on Sunday).
As for the story behind it, well that's about half of my life...
