Skunks are part of Musteloidea, but aren't classified as Mustelids. They're part of Mephitidae, which just contains skunks, as opposed to Mustelidae, which is made of up the weasels, otters, martens and badgers!
It's a fairly recent change though, as Mephitidae used to be rolled into Mustelidae, then SCIENCE happened and the families were split up. :)

The other topic of contention on 'where certain species go' at the moment are the red plains wolves, Canis rufus. Are they wolves? Are they coyotes? Are they hybrids? It seemed for a few months that the people with the responsibility changed their minds every week!
(I studied biology with a leaning towards animal physiology/morphology and general macrobiology. So I'm full of useless info like this.)
