I work in a geotechnical surveyor lab testing mud and about an hour ago I followed a squeaking noise to the duct in the lab. Unscrewed it and this baby squirrel popped out.
The people in my lab wanted to kill it because grey squirrels in the UK are vermin but I caught the squirrel before anyone else could do anything about it and took it outside. Poor thing was petrified. I don't know where it's mummy or daddy was and I'm proper worried about it. Us squirrels hafta stick together. I hope the lab squirrel finds its way home. There's only space for one baby squirrel in this lab. Unless it's trying to get my job

It's not a native species of squirrel here in the UK and as a result it's practically wiped out the red squirrel which is Britain's proper squirrel. So you're supposed to kill grey squirrels. But there's no red squirrels in England anymore so I don't see the point in killing squirrels that are so far away from where red ones live. And even if there were red ones here (like me...omg mebbe it was an assassin!) I still wouldn't kill things. We don't kill illegal immigrants so I don't see why we kill squiggles. It makes me sad
"But there's no red squirrels in England anymore"
You are wrong!! There ARE Red squirrels in the UK.. They're just in remote areas...
"I don't see the point in killing squirrels that are so far away from where red ones live"
....Wha? There WERE reds in the areas where the greys are now! they were "pushed" out by the greys...
You should NOT have released it into the wild!
I'm sorry to be down on you like this but there are some VERY good reasons...
Grey squirrels don't just eat all the food that reds would eat (a bit like a burgler raiding your fridge), they can also can carry somthing that I think is called "Squirrel Pox", greys are immune to this but the reds are not...
More info... (brace yourself, you may not like what you see...)

There are reds in the UK yes they're in Scotland not England. I live about 500 miles from the closest red squirrel. I'm sorry but even if I had found this in Scotland, the poor thing can't help being what it is and it deserves life just as much as the next thing. As it is there's now a new foreign squirrel, the black squirrel which is now beginning to wipe out the greys. It's just the way life is.

Omg I feel so bad for laughing at that, but it's true we don't. And it's muchly the same thing.
Also, I wouldn't worry about the squirrel too much, Toddlergirl; if it was old enough to be out and about, away from its nest, then chances are good that it'll be able to survive on its own, God willing.^^

The Eastern Grey Squirrel is an invasive species -- they're not native, and they thrive better in the UK than the European Red Squirrels who were there before. Grey squirrels can eat a wider variety of foods than red ones. And I guess there's a disease they carry that kills the red ones but not the grey ones. But it's not as if the European Red Squirrel is endangered -- it's only endangered in the UK. Red squirrels are all over the rest of Europe.
Cute little critter. I had a similar experience in school once, except it was a little bird instead of a baby squirrel in a place it shouldn't be. One of my classmates yelled "kill it" and found his sorry hide being unceremoniously sent to principal's office (to be her office minion...true torture, trust me) and I was the one who caught the poor bird and took it outside. My teacher sent me to the bathroom to wash my hands.
The cat in me has to ask, was it hard to catch? Or to hold onto?
While I am not a big fan of protecting introduced species, if they aren't close to threaten species habitat, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Besides, anyone who can kill anything that cute worries me. Do make sure that the hole the little one got in is found and sealed to prevent any more mishaps.

True compassion for animals is rare. I know I'd do the same. Squirrel extermination is disgusting behaviour. If you really want to protect the red squirrels, just create a frozen zoo.
If you'd like to see something unusual in squirrels check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyGm8g0OR-g . Don't know if you've seen anything like that in life.
