When I started developing equipment for my game, I had this idea that skills were to come from what you were wearing. It seemed like a good idea, mixing and matching gear for what you wanted to do. After getting stumped at what I wanted the gear to do stat wise, I started to branch out to RPG Maker forums to get some feedback. It was helpful and eye opening. To start, my system could force people to wear gear they don't want or dislike in order to be effective. If they wanted to use say an ice skill but it was only found on this wand and they wanted to use staves then I risk alienating that person.
After sitting down and stewing on the feedback I got, I realized, I was adding an unnecessary layer for the player, and it wasn't exactly 'fun'. I still wanted the feeling of being limited and wanting the player to prepare for an adventure. So on that note, I'm removing skills from the weapons and instead the player will now equip skills to bring to combat. As you can see in the screen shot, the player starts with 4 slots he can place any skill he's learned in. The information screen about the skills are still a work in progress but you get the general idea. As you upgrade your armour you can find pieces that give additional slots as well.

I have thought of that idea, to make sure the player takes a balanced skill set. One skill slot dedicated to heals and the like. I don't think it's possible with the script I am using, its an all or nothing thing. If the player wants to overload his skill bar with all attacks or all heals he can.
Ah crud. I was going to say. If you could do that in a hypothetical sense, you could have something like saaay, Demonic Armor. This kind of armor only allows you to equip destructive and dark spells. You wouldn't be able to equip a conventional healing spell. Something like that which would make sense.
