Our 3D printer was built using a reprap kit purchased online then we made several upgrades to it to improve it so we didn't actually fully home make it, yes it was assembled by us but it was bought as a kit. I'm sure there must be kits to assemble laser cutters at home online :)
pretty much any design can be improved and modified when it comes to hardware like this - its essentially looking at the fundamental design of the product and then thinking "how can I make it bigger?". Although my only experience with laser cutters have been with the ones used by
