This wasn't actually part of the job, just an afterthought on my part. It's a bit blunt, I admit, but realistically what other ending to the story could there be?

Funny you should mention that. Apparently one of the bog people discoverd in Denmark is a 15 year old girl who is buried in the peat upright. Unlike most mummies found in the bog, who are recument, and presumablyh either exceutions or sacrifices, the girl seems to have sunk standing up in her cloathes! Best bet is that she was some unfortunate who lost her way like Toshi some fifteen hundred or two thousand years ago. All I have is a text. I've never found an illustration of this particular mummy, so can't vouch for her condition. She'd be reddish brown, but that's all I can say.
Little did anyone know that an alien apace probe AI crashed through of the ceiling of the cave, millenia ago, and has been waiting for someone to come close enough to mind-meld with them. Toshi has her mind downlaoded into the AI as she drowns, and can project herself anywhere in the world as a holo figure, gifted with superior intellect and all sorts of "powers" due to the rays and force fields of the probe.
Sounds like a bad anime series...

I loved this story. The world needs more mud-capable adventurous schoolgirls. But that would just be replacement numbers!
Poor Toshi sounded like she had a history of day-wear damaging behaviour, which would make a larger accident inevitable. It may have been a bad end, but she looked great doing it!
Was this the first or second version of the comic?

Well maybe it's not actually mud. She said it felt like glue. Who knows what strange things might be in deep, remote underground caverns. Maybe it's some creature's layer and it's a substance from it, or that it lives in. And as she drowns in it, it infuses her body, making her into a humanoid version of it. And probably takes her to be his mate. Happy ending. At least for the muck creature.
A GIRL IN DISTRESS?
Well, certainly this is more my area( Mental note! I needs buy the books of Nancy Drew! )... I usualy enjoys a lot the idea of snooper girls detectives, from the tradition of Daphne Blake and Penny Gadget beign caught... Tied and subsequence gagged too by the bad guys, when the least the girls beign caught or beign caught from behind hand gagged! Ever questionated to me by my detractors, includes if they drawing the same or proclame they can and I don´t must drawing those thing( The double moral or triple in some cases ) I not denied never the idea of drawing cuttie girls snooper detectives usualy just tied and gagged. But with some comissions and economic problems another becomes sometimes th story...
Whatever! The concept here is far a bit to the girls in mud what You can drawing with style and make looks cute or childish in many at the times... But here You made the girl be in a suden peril by a trapdoor in the floor meanwhile She was just walking arround with Her lamp maybe checking something and was unawared about a situation likes this... The most pure and classical style of the detective soap scene or for cartoon show... Keeping my interest for Your usual quality, the panty peek likes a kind of unespected fan service and the most adorable a damsell in distress or DID who nobody knows She was there snoping... Not likes poor Preppy Marshmouse!
Heh heh... I know the guy who does Preppy (or Penny) Marshmouse. I don't know if you were aware of it, but he uses an old English children's book/magazine illustration style, possibly the same style used for the drawings in some Nancy Drew mysteries. I'm not sure just where I've seen that style before, but I *have* seen it and recognize the artist's deliberate use of it. Unfortunately, we don't see much (if any) new work from him. For that matter, most of his material is no longer available anywhere online.
