The one on the left is Sam, and he's a vampire, and on the right is Aldous, and he's...not |D
Aldous was upset because he got it in his head that Sam didn't need him any more, because he was basically Sam's personal blood bank, but they had a falling out and hadn't seen each other for a long time. But Sam likes him so much, and they were both miserable when they weren't seeing each other.
When Sam refused to take blood from him, though, Aldous thought that he was useless, so he went in the kitchen and sliced his wrist so that Sam pretty much had no choice but to feed off him.

Unlike Aldous, who was staggering and leaning against the wall tiredly, Sam felt more invigorated than he had in weeks. He blinked his eyes a few times and ran both hands through his hair. After a second, he noticed Aldous smiling a bit. "What... why are you smling...?" Though he had a little twitch of a smile at one corner of his mouth while asking.

Aldous continued to smile, but he looked down at the floor. "...Because...you actually need me. Even though we didn't see each other for a long time, to you...maybe I'm not something that can just be thrown away easily." His smile slowly faded as he spoke. "I want you to keep needing me..."
