If you've been through my gallery, you'll recall that I seem to have this "thing" for Duke Ellington's piece, "Satin Doll"... and no surprise, this is the version I've mentioned on a few occasions where I literally thought in music during my solo.
This recording from "late-in-the-20th-century" is of the "Town of Babylon All Star Jazz Band" - a collection of about 17 of volunteer musicians from around the Township of Babylon, NY (Long Island). We'd get together every summer, practice about 4 weeks and start about 7 performances during the summer nights at various local town beaches or pools. ALWAYS fun!
Yours Truly, being a bass (guitar) player, and not owning my own, I borrowed the electric bass / amp / speaker cabinet from my high school... and the bass I played / learned on? A Fender American Vintage 57 Precision White Blonde Maple! ( http://tinyurl.com/2n2cv9 ) The one I played was a bit worn and chipped.... and I took the pickup guard off at one point... but... MAN, I want one again! That was a BEAUTIFUL instrument! I wish I could buy it from my High School, even being 20+ years later.
Anyway... Bass Players don't get many chances for solos in the Big Band genre... so when I had 2 that year, I was thrilled.... seeing as it was my last year to play with the band before moving up to Buffalo. (The other was in Seven Steps To Heaven.. and that solo was.. uhm... 'Odd'. I'll see if I have that one soon.)
But, yeah... this was, arguably, my finest moment, musically. You know how the stereotypical jock, pining for past football glory is kinda sad? Well, I don't think I am... I think I'm special in this regard. I mean, come on? How many of us have that moment when you shift consciousness and think in, not just another language, but in a completely different medium?
Transfered from conventional audio cassette via RCA -> Stereo headphone plug into Frankenputer, captured with Audacity... and not enough cleanup as far as I'm concerned... but it works for now.
ENJOY!
**EDIT**
OH! On my asking, the piano player was playing the block chords for me as we came into the back half... and we did NOT pla the timing on those hits. It just happened!
