Thunderbirds

I'm going to be putting together a Kickstarter for a novel I wrote a while back, and I've been doing some art for the presentation. One of the critters in the story are giant condors called thunderbirds. Although there's not anything in this pictures to show scale, an adult is about the size of a Cessna. Generally they're peaceful, but every once in a while some go rogue and need to be dealt with. The one of the bottom right doesn't have a crest because it's not an adult.

Question: At what point in the writing of a novel, do you start a kickstarter for it? I have one half-written, but I haven't Kickstarter'd it yet because it's nowhere near done, and I probably wouldn't make the various goals in time.

OP
My book has been done for a while. I'm going to be doing the Kickstarter to raise money for professional copyediting, a particular cover artist, and possibly interior illustrations. I would suggest you don't do a Kickstarter until you have the book finished.
