I figured I'd try to draw with and without an undersketch and see the difference. Unlike the Backing Out version (which you can't see in the gallery unless you have the adult filter on), my chibi style doesn't seem to suffer as much from not doing a sketch, first.

I was drawn freeform, Tawny was drawn with some basic shapes, first. Tawny looks "better", of course, but the proportions aren't that far off. I spent roughly 5 minutes on each, which, believe it or not, is very fast by my usual standards. I'm pathetic at composition and poses.
