I posted my refs onto /r/furry just to show them off, and
infinitedge showed up and drew this sketch! I didn't ask him, it just appeared.
I actually kind of like it! It makes me think of the Crusaders. Of course, he's noble and just, despite the history of the Crusades. ;)
Thanks a ton! I wasn't expecting this neat surprise!

Oh, most certainly there were atrocities. But what is also true is that those atrocities were, for the most part, not considered atrocities in their time. And the Church tried to rein in those abuses that they did see, such as the impromptu pogroms in Germany or the ravaging of the Balkan countryside by the people's crusade, etc...

Yeah. One of the difficulties was it was trying to manage large groups of people spread out over a great distance in an age before telephones or even cars. Many people were uneducated on top of that and often went to war for their own reasons. I remember covering this in history class. It basically came down to being unable to maintain a homogenous and singularly focused group of people.
Indeed! I don't think Pope Urban II quite anticipated the reaction to his speech at Claremont. At the same time, later Crusades actually had fewer of these impromptu atrocities as they were often more organized and professional. That said, it truly is remarkable, a miracle some would say, that the First Crusade was a success.
