Well it might be easier with an inflatable character with a more humanoid face, like the one in your icon. I have very little experience with 3d so bear with me here, but it seems like it'd be possible to make a character with a posable mouth, eyes and eyebrows, yet it also looks inflatable at the same time.
Don't take this as me saying your 3d stuff is bad or anything, because it isn't. All I'm saying is that you should probably try doing something like that because it'd help make your pictures look more animated, and it'd make your games more immersive.

Hm, this'll be tough. Alan (my avatar) has a moveable mouth but I don't see much potential for using mesh animation for the eyes, using multiple layers and alpha would quickly run into clipping or Z fighting issues. I'll experiment whether I can get generated animated textures in Blender
