3d printing right now that I've seen is either good quality or affordable, not both. Custom sculpting in a 3d program rather than clay wouldn't necessarily be more cost effective even if that wasn't so. The printer is a significant upfront cost for a commission type with waning interest.
However, it will be interesting to observe what happens to the art of sculpture as a whole when 3d printing is further refined.
