I try to let my paint do all the texture work if I can. (or whatever passes for paint in digital stuff)

Yeah. Textures can sometimes be handy for specific things (especially if you're trying to nail a particular style that's more realistic), but I do tend to prefer a more painterly approach. I think the stoke quality really works in your favor here.

I think one of the big helps is that I made a recent jump in image resolution (an effect of having changed computers and monitors). I have to work large and zoom in close and I think it really tightens things up for me.
