Basil, my hubby, is trying to convince me to give making my own head a try, but I am TERRIFIED. Drawing is no problem, but I haven't been able to figure out how to foam a head yet and I've had the supplies for over a year. T____T
I just don't want something I care about to turn into a puddle of fur and be one of "Those" suit heads that people cringe at. ._.
I don't even know where on earth to start with this thing. I have a wings tutorial I'm going to have a play with, but if anyone has DIY tutorials on foaming heads and the like, pleaaaaase show me. ;^;
Advice along the way, or critiques would be amazing. T^T
She won't have a moving jaw since I never draw her with one anyways. XD Who knows, I might throw this out the window and just buy a head when I'm finally able to, but he's asking me to give it a try first before I plop the funds down for a ready made one. T_T He has more faith in me than I do right now.
I'll have to stay true to what I know my style to be, and hopefully be able to see out of those eyes. XD And ignore my chest gem for now, I'll probably figure that out if the thing turns out.

Thats a fantastic resource! :O I've tried searching on youtube for video tutorials but most of what I come up with don't seem super thought out. :< Found a playlist through beetlecat that has a number of suit thingies to fish through! Definite going to have a play! :D
You will only find out after trying n don't get discouraged... Goin to take a good amount of effort n tears on the way but that's just how things go.
What way are you thinking of making the foam part?... Haven't had any fur experience but have put together a full iron man out of foam so could help a lille bit with that bit
Oh n btw... Good luck :)

The foam starting point is where I'm actually having difficulties. XD All of the tutorials I've watched or videos of people just putting a head togther seem to start with shaping the snout with foam on a balaclava. :< Burd head = WHATDOIDO?! I'm having to get a different hot glue gun as well. >.>; Found out the hard way that mine is a hot temp so the foam doesnt glue. And woah, iron man foam outfit?!?!?!? O_O
I know how you feel, one of the main reasons I don't even lift a finger to try making my own furs hit is that I don't want her to e cup on those kinds of critique pages. I love my fursona and so I am very protective of her. She is my baby and Ido t want the other kids to make fun of her because she's different. :(
Go for it!! The first tutorial page looks good and you always have Rez available if you need to chat, ask questions or get help on it hon :) I bet you will be great; a large percentage of what makes a good suit is having the artistic vision to see when it looks correct or not at each stage, which you certainly have!!
I can't wait to see what you do XD

The great thing about fursuiting is that you're guaranteed to have at least a dozen other fursuits that came out a million times worse than your own. Give it a shot and see what happens. The hardest part is getting the molding right, so look at some of the different styles for doing one and give it a go.

You should ask
Temperance about head making, I attended her panel yesterday about head making and it was very awesome

I have every faith in you Lap! C: It does help to be an artist when fursuit building; you can visualize the shape of something better than someone who hasn't had any artistic experience in my opinion. It's what I do anyway.
Looking at tutorials is great to start, as you go on you'll make your own style and progress that way. I've done that and now I'm just improving on my head style. C:
As I think Glenn may have said to you a few days ago, I would always be willing to travel to you to help, or if you'd like to travel to me I have all the tools and things readily available for use. C:
I don't expect payment for helping anyone, and I do think it'd be good for you to perhaps work with someone on your first, then you can pick up skills from them to use on possible other suits.
And I'm with Basil when he says you should try it before shelling out for one. And I'd also argue it'd be cheaper just for us to work on it if you're up for it. C:
Then if you decide buying is better, which I'm probably sure it's not (depends on who you get it from IMO), I have fursuit prices on my art price list in the description. Considering you have materials, I wouldn't charge for those, so it'd be even cheaper than what it says on my list. C:
Happy decision making! I really hope you give it a try; it really is a lot of fun once you get past the initial fear. C:
If it helps, I have some faux fur I'd be willing to send your way if you'd like a bit of practice before making a Lap head. C:

Awwww, Rez. <333 Thank you ;_; I'm finding the issue I'm having (and probably the start of them) is that I don't know where to begin to make a foam dome. >_> Or how much space to give myself inside of a foam head. XD; I suppose I could make it form fitting, but then it'd probably be really uncomfortable for me. :/
I might poke you here and there if you dont mind, haha! Seems everyone has their own ways of putting one of these together, so smashing heads with someone might be a nice idea! XDD And skype makes for less travel cost! Though if I could easily get down to you, I'd totally do it. XDDD!
I'm trying to figure out where to find faux fur from. I have swatches from fauxthrow.com and they do a gorgeous jade thats perfect for lappys teal bits but not sure how using super high quality looking fur for one thing, and not for the rest might look strange? D: But finding a bright orange seems to be my issue there! Theres a place near by here that apparently sells faux fur but I don't know if they're open to the public to go in, but if they are I know what I'm doing Saturday. @^@!

You're very welcome! ;w;
Ah I can understand that. I'd recommend investing in a foam mannequin head and either material to make a balaclava head or a ready made balaclava. They're very very useful, fits to your face but it's not uncomfortable. Using the right material there or buying a balaclava that 'wicks' sweat away is your best bet; it won't make you as warm.
Full foam (if you decide that balaclavas are not your thing) is just a case of getting a big sheet of foam, wrapping it around your head to as tight as you want it, then mark where you need to glue. Once you've created a sort of tube, you just put it back over your head to make sure the fit is right, then close up the top to make it rounded. Once that's done you mark where your eyes and mouth hole need to go, cut those out and you have your starting base. C: I first started with this method and I can tell you that it's VERY fiddly, and I would recommend a balaclava above all else. (I have tried using plastic canvas as well, which is pretty good until the corners start to hurt. X_X)
That's completely fine, you know where I am, or I'll drop you my mobile number over Facebook and you can get me there too (I'll be in Leicester with Glenn until Wednesday evening).
I'd definitely be able to help you out; it does help to have two people working on something. C:
Getting to me is pretty straight forward by train; From Birmingham it's just 40 minutes away and I'm sure someone can pick you up from the station with me if you do fancy it. C:
Faux fur you can get from a lot of places, it's just finding the fur that's good quality and what is not.
Most faux fur labelled 'fun fur' you want to steer the hell away from. It molts, it gets messy and it's generally not backed very well for trimming.
The brand you should keep an eye out for is 'DF' or 'Distinctive Fabrics' Faux Fur. This is the stuff that comes in a lot of colours and is very good quality for money. Unfortunately, unless you have someone in the US who would be willing to ship the fur to you, you can't get it over to the UK anymore. Luckily you're in a position where you have family in the US so they could probably help you out with that! :D You should be looking at the 'Long Pile' fur. Long Pile (just in case you don't know what it means) is faux fur that has long strands. It's best to use because when it comes to trimming, you can trim just as much as you need, not too much.
Here's the stuff that most people use: http://www.distinctivefabric.com/fa.....ct=SLDLGHRFUR1
I'm VERY jealous; I wish i could get it into the UK! C:
I hope that all helps for the time being! If you need anything, feel free to drop me a line! C: I can also check train ticket prices for getting to yours if you need some extra help.

I've ordered a balaclava and it should be here soon I think. ;^;!! And I have a foam head ready! So those two are fine! :D
I'll give the tube thing a try tonight and see if I can make it fit right on my head! I've ended up just ordering more foam so I can destroy the stuff I have here just in case. @_@;;
What would you recommend doing for the beak? D: I have the clay stuff you can shove in the oven and see how that goes first. XD;
Im trying to go through different fur types and was highly considering ordering fur from DF. The colours I'm most worried over are finding a decent orange and aqua, but theirs seem to be REALLY nice. I tried researching the aqua colour first, and found http://www.deviantart.com/art/Shine.....lete-313461926 uses both types of Fur I was looking at. For Lappy, shes closer to the darker colour than the lighter aqua, so I'll probably stick with the darker one from Faux Throw. Orange seems to be the difficult one as I can buy white, black and jade. :< Orange, why are you so scarce!

That fur is very very nice. ;w; Seeing that suit at CF in person was so wonderful. I was looking at that colour for my guy: TwinFang But it's SO expensive ;n; If you have any left after making Lappy I'll have to buy some off you if you don't need it ;w;
For the beak, I'd recommend fimo or sculpey clay, hollow it out before you bake it or it'll be heavy!! D: You should also 'score' the area where you'll be gluing it to the head; it'll be easier to glue on and stay on. C:
If you do use the fur from Faux throw, I'd be tempted to buy other colours in the same sort of quality, or it'll look very out of place. I'll have a look and see if there are any nicer oranges on DF or something for you. C: There is a list of shops that sell fur on UKFur if you're on there. I'm not anymore. XD

http://www.furaffinity.net/view/10112610/ Gah, I cant decide. Maybe Aqua does look better? D: *Smashes face into the desk* Outside photos look different!
I ended up going with the darker one rather than the lighter. D: After having a good think about it, the darker one will be nicer to use as it matches a lot of my clothes too haha!
I bought White, Black and Jade off of that site, and then Orange off of ebay. The first UK orange that actually looks decent. @_@;
