“You don’t understand the power we wield here,” the older fox chided sweetly, without a trace of dismay in his voice, crouching down to the child’s level. As he hopelessly, desperately tugged at his diaper-tapes to no avail, Lynn felt the gentle, familiar touch of a strong paw – like that of a father – cradling his chin and guiding him back to reality.
It sent shivers of bliss through him as much as it sent chills up his spine, the encouraging tones more condescending than loving. He peered into his captor’s eyes and saw them full of pride – perhaps, of all things, pride in Lynn, the object of his affection, swooning him with promises the child knew he couldn’t keep. But he was no more able to resist than when they first met, even after the adult had betrayed him. He grew heavier, softer, losing himself in those deep wells of emotion as they locked eyes – forgetting, if only for a moment, the pain that wracked his whole body.
“You don’t respect it,” he continued. “You don’t respect anyone, least of all yourself; you’re too proud for even that. That is why I’m here, the sole reason I exist – to teach you respect, even if I must break it into you. You can hate yourself all you want, but you can never hate me, no matter what. Because I’m the one person who will always love you in this dark, dark world. Because everything I say, everything I do, is the truth, for your own good.
“Because everything I say…is Law.”
Lynn started to speak, in the vain hope of challenging his words, but felt himself silenced instead, petrified by a sudden, unshakeable terror. The man’s smile seemed to slant into that same, sinister curve as before, filling him with an instant of dread that lingered. It was an ominous sign of things to come. He had lost that euphoric feeling, his heart sinking and his body slumping. And he knew, no matter how much he denied it, that this was no longer the Heaven he had begged for.
This was his Hell.
“From this day forward,” the man said, his other paw slowly caressing the seat of Lynn’s diaper, “you’re mine.”
With quaking legs and frightened eyes, trembling paws and bated breath, too horrified to move or think, Lynn stammered, “W-…W-What are you?”
In the most unsettling way…he simply grinned.
“I am an Arbiter,” he proclaimed, his voice barely a whisper now, yet resonating with such dominion and power that it echoed and splintered throughout Lynn’s entire being, “and I alone will judge you for your crimes.”
His once-gentle eyes flickered. Lynn found himself stuck there staring into them, quivering in a pathetic mix of confusion, panic, and, worst of all, awe. There was something inhuman about them, something covetous and lustful beneath the pride and passion, like the eyes of a conqueror who yearned for nothing but power at any cost.
“For your first sentence…now that you’re my baby…we can’t have that ‘control’ getting in the way, can we?”
