Yes water is its number one enemy, but sweat isn't enough for that. I built an all black furred mask with paper mache base and that refused to melt while it was being worn on a hot summer day. Sweat isn't enough. Since the fur is applied with glue, they provide an almost waterproof layer and it also adds strength to the mask. You need to apply 4 layers to make it strong enough for this job.
We did thought about that too. I usually spray the inside with paint. to make it look nicer and prevent internal moisture from ruining it. Spraying it from the outside with either paint or clear coat is not a good idea, because that means the glue for the fur will be holding onto the paint not the paper Mache, which is a weaker bond. The only idea I had was to spread glue on the outher layer covering the entire surface and as you are furring. That way it will make the mask stronger, make it watertight as you are furring it.
