“Lowen wait up~!” She wined as she bounded over the root-cluttered forest ground to catch up with the black wolf that was a head of her. He looked over his shoulder at her.
“It’s not my fault if you can’t keep up.” He stated, jumping up onto a rock that was in the way of the path they were following. He seemed to hesitate a moment, trying to decide whether or not to wait for his friend who was starting to catch up. The silver umbreon whined again.
“You still don’t have to go so fast! Where did you get so much energy all of a sudden?” She finally jumped up onto the rock with the other, her ears lowered slightly.
“I’m just excited to let you see this. I think you’ll really like it. But we have to hurry otherwise we’ll miss it.” He stated, jumping from the rock to continue along the path. The other quickly followed, so not to be left behind again.
“Can’t you tell me what it is we’re going to see?” She questioned, following closely behind the other.
“No, the whole point is that it’s a surprise.” The girl whined again.
“Not even a hint?”
“Not even a hint, Grey.”
“Fine~” She wined. “You win… But how much longer till we get there?”
“It’s only a little farther.”
Grey wasn’t sure what to think about this. Lowen, her best friend, had been acting strangely all day long. He seemed anxious and then once it was starting to get later in the afternoon he became more and more insistent that she follow him. Usually the level-headed wolf didn’t really press her to do anything; it was usually she that would drag him all over the woods to show him things she had found, not the other way around.
His actions weren’t the only thing that plagued the young unbreon’s mind however. She had other things that pulled on her thoughts as she followed him to their unknown destination. When her thoughts began to wander, they actually wandered to Lowen.
The two had been friends for longer than she could really remember. They had always played together under the canopy of the thickly leaved trees and lived together in the forest, but her feelings had only grown stronger and stronger as time pressed on. What had been a simple, uncomplicated friendship with him became an undeniable attraction to him. She had grown to love him, but had seen no sign of him feeling the same.
Suddenly she was pulled by her thoughts by running into Lowen, who had stopped in front of her. The two fell over, Grey landing on Lowen in the brush.
“Ow… What the hell? Didn’t you notice me stop?” He questioned with a faint whimper in the back of his throat.
“I’m so sorry, Lowen!” She quickly moved away, not wanting to make the moment more awkward then it already was. “I was thinking and got distracted…”
“Thinking? Of what?” He rolled over onto his paws and slowly stood before turning to look at her.
“Just some things. Nothing important.” She wanted to tell him what she was thinking and feeling, but the fear of his reaction and the worry that such a confession would ruin their friendship kept her silent. Though what she wanted most was to be able to be with him as more than a friend, it wasn’t worth losing him completely to try and gain that.
Lowen hesitated again. He wasn’t sure if he should believe her. She would usually tell him everything, but recently it seemed as though she was hiding something from him. She was usually very expressive and unafraid to share her feelings with him, but there seemed to be something in the way now. Part of him wanted to ask, to try and press her to tell him want was wrong. But he didn’t want to push her. He had to worry about one thing at a time. Lowen glanced up at the forest canopy above them to look at the little glimpses of the sky through the leaves.
It was almost time.
“Alright… If you say so. But it’s almost time for the surprise. So close your eyes and hold onto my tail, ok?” He stated. Grey looked at him, her ears twitching slightly.
“Um… Alright.” She would gently bite on the fur on his tail and closed her eyes, waiting for the gentle pull that would mean that he was moving forward, which came within a moment of her eyes closing.
She was nervous about taking these blind steps. But if she could trust anyone in her life, Lowen was definitely one of them.
“Alright, you can stop and let go, but don’t open your eyes yet.” He spoke softly, which seemed strange to her, but she wasn’t going to question it as she let go of his tail and sat down. There was silence for a moment before she felt the light brush of Lowen’s fur against hers as he sat next to her.
“Now you can open them.” He said softly.
The view that met her eyes when she opened them was breathtaking. He had lead her, without her realizing, to the top of one of the highest cliffs in the forest which over looked a large part of the forest below, but that wasn’t the part of this view that struck her. What struck her most was the gorgeous colors of the sun that was setting in front of her. Shades or orange, red, yellow, blue, purple, and pink all tinted the sky and blended together. A soft gasps escaped her as she looked at it.
“Wow… Lowen… This is… It’s amazing! How on earth did you find it?” Her voice was soft and shocked. She didn’t expect him to take the time to find something like this and go out of his way to show her.
“I was looking for a place to sit and think for a while, just clear my head for a while. I found that path up here and saw this and I just…” He trailed off. “I thought you would really like seeing it, I know how much you appreciate this kind of thing…” He came across as nervous and unsure, like there was something he was hiding. This time, she decided to question it.
“Lowen, is something wrong? You’ve been acting kind of strangely all day…” She looked to him and he was looking down at his paws.
“It’s not that anything is wrong really I just…” He stopped, taking a breath. “I don’t know how to say this, Grey…”
She stared blankly at him. Was he? He couldn’t be trying to say what she was thinking.
“Grey, I… I wanted to ask you something.”
She hesitantly nodded, waiting anxiously for him to continue.
“I wanted to know…” He nervously pawed at the ground in front of him. “What you would say if I told you that… If I told you that I care a lot about you?”
“What do you mean? I know that you care about me. We’ve been friends for-“
“I don’t mean it like that!” He wasn’t upset, but he was obviously frustrated with himself and previous statement. He paused and took a deep breath, trying to relax a little and keep his usual levelheaded manor.
“What do you mean then?” Grey spoke softly, hesitantly. She didn’t want to jump to conclusions. She didn’t want to say anything that would ruin this moment. But she wanted to know if he meant what she hoped so deeply that he did. Lowen let out a soft sigh.
“I…” He paused, trying to compose himself. “I wanted to tell you that I love you, Grey.”
She looked at him, shocked at first. Did he really say that? Was she dreaming? Could this really be happening?
“I wouldn’t blame you if you thought I was crazy or something… I just… I needed to tell you and I-“
“Lowen.” She said, cutting him of. “I don’t think you’re crazy.” She said softly, smiling a little and hesitating before gently leaning close to nuzzle his neck. “What’s really crazy is that I love you too.” She whispered to him.
She could feel him go to move so she moved away a little to look at him. When she looked to him she found him looking back at her.
“Grey, do you really mean that?” He questioned softly. She smiled and gently nuzzles him again.
“I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t mean it.”
The two sat quietly for a while, enjoying the peaceful silence and the setting sun as the sky started to turn darker and darker colors till the soft purple color of twilight stained the sky.
The young unbreon was still a little shocked. All this time she had been afraid of what he would say if he found out that she loved him, when it turns out that he had been feeling the same all along.
“Grey…” He spoke softly to get her attention.
“Yes?” She sat up so she was no longer leaning on him and looked to him.
He didn’t say another word, but instead turned to the side and bent down, picking something up off the ground next to him. When he turned back to her, she saw a light blue flower held gently between his teeth. Slowly and carefully Lowen leaned close and gently placed the flower behind her ear.
“Be mine?” He whispered before pulling away to look at her. A faint rosy blush turned her face from a soft silvery blue to a faint pink. It took her a moment to be able to form the words.
“Y-Yes, Lowen.” She leaned close to him, resting her head on him. “Of course I will.”
A cool gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the forest canopy as the last rays of sun disappeared under the horizon, leaving the two under the beautiful, star-studded night sky; a beautiful start to a new love that blossomed in the twilight woodlands.
