Both of these were done pixel-by-pixel inside of GIMP. The image on the left is part of a very small array of sprites intended for a game I presently have in the works... Unfortunately since the things take upwards of five hours (at least) a frame I may never get it finished...
The character's name is Abraham. I'm not going to get into the details and nuances of his personality just yet... suffice it to say he's not exactly a friendly fellow.
