Greta Zell is a member of Rain Island's Intelligence Service, a 'rogue shaman' employed as an interrogator. Her story is a bit of a tragedy.
The lynxess was born to a mother who died bringing her into the world, and to a father who blamed her for her mother's death. He drank heavily and regularly abused her, physically and mentally.
Until she reached a certain age, when he found a whole new method of abuse.
In Rain Island, as in a few other places on Earth in the Spontoon Island universe, the Veil between the worlds gets a bit thin, and the gods can speak to select individuals. The Anarchcracy's Synod (the union representing all of the organized religions in the country, from the Russian Orthodox to the Militant Agnostics) usually spot when a shaman is Called, and sees to their training and registry. A licensed shaman's testimony in court is considered prima facie evidence.
Greta is a rogue shaman, whose Calling came to her rather suddenly at the age of sixteen while her father was raping her. In the words of the forensic investigator at the scene, "she pulled his soul out by the roots and threw it God-knows-where."
She's bitter, spiteful, and has a special hatred of men. The best you can hope for from her is a cold sneer. That's not to say she's a lesbian, either; her sexual encounters over the past seventeen years can be easily counted on the fingers of one paw.
Utterly cold inside, she can 'spirit-walk' a person, delving deep into them and essentially peeling apart their psyche like an onion. It's a deeply disturbing experience, and more than one interrogated subject has soiled themselves from loss of control. Unwilling to kill her and unable to control her talent, the Synod allows her to work for the Intelligence Service.
