Sugar gliders would be a nightmare since their membranes stretch from wrist to ankle like bats, but you can get away with bat wings stopping at the waist.
My main goal with Hemia was to have moderately-believable wings, which I feel requires more of a body connection for balance purposes, as you point out. And oof, a sugar glider would have to have ankle rings to connect an outfit to!
