Going for weird here - trying to avoid excessive conventionality. Some rather twisted-up "Book of Revelations" imagery plus purely made-up details.
Thought of going with highlights on all the chains but decided that was too "busy".
The little creature is simply a plot device - something for Mephisto to talk to as this segment unfolds. Since Mephisto is the Marvel Universe "Satan" there is no need for ALL the souls in bondage to be of Earthly origin. The end of its chain IS connected to Hades, but leads out of our dimension and so appears to vanish.

Reminds me of me mum.

Mommy! Really, making Mephisto appear as a twisted, funhouse, almost Silent Hill version of a mouse is a really creative touch. Personally, my first response on seeing something like that? (It sounds much pretier in the original Japanese) Sky Saint, grant me the power of magic! Mahou Henshin, Maaji Maji Majiiro!

I thought briefly of having Mephisto appear as the only human character in Gadget's dream. But I decided that I would try to make him look anthropomorphic, not so much as because it fit the scenario, but because I wanted to make him look like some sort of abnormal cancerous growth. Much of the symbolism of giving him human features would be lost.
