This is one of the projects I've been working on recently.
A few months ago, I saw a really neat leather dragon mask online, made by Zarathus. I thought it was cool, so I decided to try making something myself.
It's been quite some time since I made my Guilmon costume, so it felt really good to make something physical again. This was my first time trying anything like this, and my first time working with leather, so I had to study up a bit.
The majority of the mask was made with leather, but I also have some mesh, to line the eye sockets, craft foam, and plastic horns. The teeth are made with apoxy, so they are a hard resin and feel very tooth like. The jaw is articulated and easy to move, and the eyes have LEDs for lighting, as well. It is breathable enough that I can wear it for quite a while without fatigue setting in. Overall, I had fun working with all kinds of new materials.
It wasn't an easy process, though. Despite planning and making a test run out of craft foam, I had to re-do major portions of the mask a few times. This took much longer and used much more leather than it would have, if I knew what I was doing from the start, but I'm really proud of my final result.
It was a really fun project, and it had some great reactions at the Renaissance Festival this year. I'll probably wear it around at cons sometimes, too.

I used a bit of craft foam inside the jaw, to make it fit more comfortably, and make the inside softer against my skin. I also used it to help mount the screen in the eyes and nose, as well as to secure the wire for the eye LEDs.
The craft foam was used more for finishing touches, and not for structure, though. I can take a picture of the inside, if you want, or one with the LEDs lit up.
The leather is strong enough on it's own, and I wanted it to be as light as possible. :)
Do you make your own horns? If so, what method do you use?
I just re-painted some costume horns that had a nice look on this one, but it would be nice to have full control over how those are shaped.

Thank you!
A full suit of this would be really difficult, but I really like the look of the head. Now, adding a few scaly leather areas to a suit made mostly of some sort of fabric might work out...
I've been thinking of picking up one of those spandex "Hero skin" things, since I saw one in a Haloween store.
