Brigit Mulvaney's an Irish setter, and as a rather militantly Catholic girl in the 1930s, she doesn't want to use birth control techniques. However, she really wants a boyfriend.
So she's started seeing quite a bit of Michael Fairweather, a red-tailed hawk gentleman from Rain Island. He's of Irish descent (a point in his favor), and his feather color matches her fur (another point).
And she doesn't have to worry about getting pregnant!
