I've never been a big Mario fan either, and I can't exactly say he's had much by means of forms.
I haven't even played Super Mario Galaxy (no Wii and all), so while I can't say how good it is or not, I will have to say that Sunshine was a total disappointment to me as well, and they meddled with 64DS more than I'd have preferred. :X
