I recently commissioned the highly talented
slushpuppy to do a picture for me. I wanted to honor another highly talented artist here on FA,
vixyyfox. I also needed an accomplice so I turned to another awesome writer, my good friend
duroc.
SlushPuppy has finished and posted her picture here. I love her work and this piece makes me all kinds of happy. Thank you so very much, Slush!
The inspiration for all this, of course, is VixyyFox. The world she has created for Scanectity Skunk and the Whackadoodle Inn is breathtaking and beautiful and and often hilarious. She is the source of much happiness on FA.
I wanted to include another of the Whackadoodle's awesome residents and a marvelous character in his own right, Duroc. He and Wire have become good friends, much like their RL counterparts. Thanks for coming to visit me so often, big D!
As I thought about what I wanted the picture to represent, I realized it was a perfect opportunity to create a story behind the scene. After getting permission from all three participants, I worked out this little vignette. I tried my best to imitate Vixyy's style but that's like going to the museum, eyeing the masterpieces on the walls and heading home thinking, "Oh, I bet I can do that!"
Nope. Vixyy's work is her own and her style is beyond my grasp. But for all that, I do believe I managed to at least put forth my intention to honor her and her inspirational work.
Thank you, each of you, for allowing me to play in the sandbox with you. We've made some terrific castles, each of us.

It's a long time indeed since I read anything of such quiet and intense beauty. The opening was mesmerising, setting the easy, unhurried pace of the piece and hooking the reader to discover the destiny of the block. And then the layers start to get peeled back, just as slowly and surely as the scupture itself emerges. I loved that you worked this through conversation with Duroc; their dialogue feels so natural, interspersed as it is with just enough description of the setting and of the two friends. And the sense of wistful melancholy came across powerfully too, just like scents intensified by an autumn evening.
This: "Oh, the kindling was there..." - wonderful imagery, relating back to the talk of stoves and fires earlier on.
And this: "Ears at twelve o'clock" - Battle of Britain, much?
Your warmth, skill and (might I say) your courage as a writer really shine throughout this piece. To write something this personal is never risk-free, but you succeed magnificantly. Amazing work.
ps - I remember now that your heroine in 'Fate' was also a wood carver... hmmm....

Thank you, good sir, for your kind words and keen observations. I really enjoy doing short pieces like this, especially ones for friends that mean so much to me. Like Wire, autumn is my favorite season and warm fires mixed with crisp cool air make a wonderful environment to visit or explore.
You noticed my nod toward Vixyy's Battle of Britain stories. I am not at all surprised.
And yes, I do have an interest in wood carving, though I don't do it myself. As I mentioned to SiriusDF, my mom's been carving wooden figures and sculptures for a long time now and it's always fascinated me.
Best wishes to you for the coming autumn!
