Well, I decided to make some more candy today. I've been wanting to try making taffy in the past and so now seemed as good a time as any. I looked at a few recipes and found a nice one to work with and went from there. It was pretty easy though my paws were tired by the end of the pulling part! Was fun though!
I made a simple vanilla taffy, but you could easily substitute in any flavor and coloring that you like. This is just natural color after the pulling part, slightly colored from the vanilla extract itself.
I'm practicing and working on candies in order to get ready for the theme of next year's Megaplex! I want to bring lots of candies!

Vanilla Salt Water Taffy
Time: About one hour (Which includes pulling and wrapping pieces time.)
What you'll need
1 Cup Sugar
2 Tbsp cornstarch
3/4 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup water
2 tbsp butter
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla extract
Combine together the sugar and cornstarch in a 1 - 1/2 quart saucepan. Stir in the water, corn syrup, butter, and salt next and bring to a boil on medium high. Place your candy thermometer in and cook until 255 degrees. Mix in vanilla extract and pour onto a silpat (A silicon baking mat) or a well greased pan. Allow to cool long enough till you can handle the taffy and then pull until the taffy lightens in color and gets a nice shine.
For comparison, when I poured the sugar out because of the extract it was sort of a gold color, but by the end of the pulling it was that off white color you see in the picture. It really changes a lot!
Want to know how to pull Taffy? There are a lot of videos on Youtube about how to Hand Pull Taffy. This is just a small batch so you can probably do the taffy in about two sets, keep the second one in a preheated oven at it's lowest setting to remain warm while you stretch the first.
Form the taffy into a long snake and I used a greased scissors in order to cut into pieces onto the silpat. Try to keep them off of each other as they'll stick together easily at this point still.
Wrap in little wax paper wraps (That you can often buy at a cooking or craft store) and hand out to your friends!
Or just eat it yourself... I don't judge.
This recipe makes around fifty pieces of taffy.
