A number of photo-reconnaisance RF-84Fs were modified to ride in the bomb bay of modified B-36 mothership to be launched for spy missions. A retractable hook in the nose before the windscreen engaged a trapeze lowered from the bomber. The FICON (FIghter CONveyor) system was initially developed soley for the purpose of providing fighter protection for B-36 missions deep inside Soviet territory.
