I inherited a brand new Rossi 44 magnum lever action, but it was shiny stainlees steel. I dislike shiny guns, so I took it to my favorite local gunsmith who Ceracoated all metal parts in sniper gray ultra flat.
The flat boxes are made for batteries, but 44 fits just fine. This is destined to be a truck-gun set up with a basic survival kit. I have a small buttstock pouch for both ammo and support gear.
I intend to leave the wood as is. It didn't come thru in the foto, but the wood is a nice red/brown and it will disappear outside.
I need to add sling swivels and a sling wrapped in 550 cord, and hollow underneath the butt-plate for additional gear.
As usual BLACK WEAPONS ARMORY went above and beyond for me.

That is the trade off for the lightweight.
For a reference though, try shooting a short magnum or 3 inch turkey load from a 12 gauge shotgun.
Funny how mild a hard kicking rifle is in comparison to a powerful shotgun round.
If you can handle a 3 inch Turkey load, you can handle the kick of a .458 Winchester Magnum!

The Redhawk is a super heavy revolver.
I prefer the balance of the Super Blackhawk and the lighter weight.
Only 1/2 inch less barrel but I never notice the weight in a backpack.
Same way I like a single shot 12 Gauge shotgun with a modified choke for backpacking.
It is light and you can vary the power levels so much.
1 oz game loads in #6 shot for most any purpose on small game, squirrel, rabbit, quail works on all and doesn't kick much.
But you can also carry a few rounds of 00 Buck and a few slugs should you need to kill a pig or deal with hostile humans in the woods such as a hidden pot farm.
