~They rise against the soaring fires.~
Of the list of things I always wanted to draw was Princess Mononoke. It is one of my most favourite movies of all times! I wanted to depict San and the three wolves run against the fires of the Tatara clan and make them look touchable as well as ghostly. I had a lot of freedom on painting the wolves as I didn't attempt to make them look like normal animals, but more like spirits.
This painting means a lot to me. It was more the time I spent doing it and enjoying the freedom of letting my brush run freely, just like Mononoke.
You can download the bigger file. :)
A little extra information to the composition: I know that many are sad about Moro's face not visible in the picture, and when working on this picture, I went through the same thinking process whether it would be the right decision to paint her face or not. I wanted to draw the full attention to San and make the wolves appear more like spirits. The speed and dynamics in this painting would have "stopped" and became stiff, if the one that runs fastest, would be still in the picture, fully visible. This is at least the way how I think and feel. :) I want to do another painting, featuring Moro fully! :D
I have WIPs and close up shots of this painting on my Facebook fan page, too! There will be a walkthrough for this painting available on there soon as well. :D ~> https://www.facebook.com/AlectorFencer

I like it - you made the wolves appear just the right amount of otherworldly. A great tribute. :)
The otherworldliness of the wolves makes Mononoke seem like the viewers focal point. Makes her seem more a part of the human world than the spirit world. If you ever do another piece, I'd like to see Mononoke with her mask and fur on, so she really blends into the transcendant nature of her adoptive family. I still secretly see her as more spirit than human. ;)
But I digress - great piece as usual. Spirits and the otherworldly seems to be what your style was made for. :)
