I've always found this method of "killing off" a character rather disturbing…not in a physical sense, obviously, but just the idea that the very essence of that character's personality and experiences just got wiped out (by whatever means; a spell dissolving, a memory wiping machine, etc.) just gives me the heebie-jeebies, and IMHO it's one of the saddest ways to see someone go…

Er, I s'pose I should've added that a lot of what makes it disturbing is the fact that they're still there, alive and well, but the mind and personality you knew and loved is gone forever… o-o
